GFI Racing Winter Series North Round 5: E Street Bridge Track Kawasald jockey Jeff Northrop topped the 250cc Pro class at the fifth and final round of the GR Racing Winter Series North. the place for the runner-up spot; Nick Davis (2-5) ended up besting Cory McDaniel (8-2). Ruben Hernandez was also a double-class winner, piloting his KTM to a pair of victories in the 60cc Intermediate and 60cc Open classes. Keeping Hernandez honest were Tyler York and Ricky Rinauro. York '----followed up with a runner-up spot in the Intermediate class via a 2-2 tally, while Rinauro duplicated the same feat in the Open class. Cobra pilot James Sacher bested the 50cc (4-6) Stock class on the main track with a 2-1 score over Gunner Sigler, who posted a 1-2 tally on the day. However, Sigler returned in the 50cc (4-6) Stock class on the Pee Wee track to take BY JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS MARYSVILLE, CA, FEB. 10 he fifth and final round of the GFI Racing Winter Series North descended upon the sandy shores of the Feather River, where lies an allnatural-terrain track, officially known as the "E Street Bridge" track. The "E" must stand for enormous, as more than 600 riders came out to do battle in the big sand pit. With all five manufactures paying contingency, the AMP-prepped course was full of color and featured one of the biggest Pro turnouts of the series. And taking the 250cc Pro-class win was Team Green Kawasaki/ProCircuit/Fox/Posey Racing-backed Jeff Northrop. Having been out of sight for some time, Northrop looked sharp as he hung with Tallon Vohland in the first moto, eventually taking a solid second, but then he rebounded in moto two with a big holeshot and held off Vohland for the win and overall on the day. "I went to Germany and raced some indoor stuff," said Northrop. "I did okay, finishing around sixth or seventh a few times; it was pretty fun. But I came out here today and tried to ride smooth, knowing that Tallon was the one to beat. He's so fast in this sand, and if you bobble just a bit, you lose so much momentum - and in that last moto, I was just 'on' the whole moto. I'm stoked." But it's a rare day in Northem California motocross when Vohland doesn't come away with a win, and it was in the 125cc Pro class that the crafty veteran made his mark. Vohland clicked off a pair of solid rides en route to a perfect 1- 1 score on the day, a performance he hopes he can carry with him as he embarks on yet another overseas adventure. "I'll be leaving for Europe in about a week to contest the GPs," the Ka wasaki/Scott/ Acerbis- backed Vohland said. "I raced this series to 70 MARCH 13, 2002' cue I !Above) Eric Nye flew his Yamahas to wins In the 125cc and 250cc Intennediate classes at the E Street Bridge Track. The first track I race in England is a sand track, so being out here today was good for me." Among the field of 16 Pros were Evan Laughridge and Scott Davis. Laughridge, aboard an American Suzuki/Roseville Cycie/IRSfThor RM, scored the runner-up spot on the day in the 125cc Pro class with a 3-2 tally, while F&S/O'NeaI/Maxxis Tiressponsored Davis snagged a couple of holeshots on the day as well as taking the third spot in the 250cc Pro class with a 3-4 showing. Intermediate speedster Eric Nye was in top form as he placed his Mach 1 Motorsports/FMF/Fly-backed Yamahas up front in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. Although Nye took a huge win in the second 250cc moto, Joey Rodriguez showed his sand prowess in moto one, leading from the start and holding Nye off until the white-flag lap. However, Nye made the pass just two turns before the checkers for the win. Rodriguez finished the day second overall with a 2-2 score. In the 125s, Nye finished out both motos unchallenged, while behind him moto scores were all over • neVlls a solid win via a perfect 1-1 score over Adrien Mahnke, who followed up with a 3-3 tally for second overall on the day. eN EStreet Bridge T_k MarysviDe, c.Jifanli.
