Skull Creek Bike Park: At the opening round of the AMA District 20 Texas Championship Hare Scrambles Series in Columbus, Texas; Andre Etheridge (K9), Cole Roemer (K12) and Michael Hughes (K4) do bailie in the 50Cc class, which was won by Chris Storrie. The weekend's activities kicked off with the 2001 series banquet. Awards were given to 28 different classes this year, as well as to three overall winners from among the A, Band C riders. The riders were very appreciative of all of the series' great sponsors, and close to $30,000 worth of product was given out to the top five riders in each class. In addition, the Texas Top 10 "Overall A" year-end contingency program paid out $6000 to 10 of the fastest hare scrambles riders in the state. This year's overall A rider was Lynn Bailey, who put in strong rides all year (only finishing off the podium once!) and showed his competitors why he carried the number-one plate. Adam Hughes of the Open B class used consistency to lay claim on the overall B award. One of the largest classes of the year was the Over 30 C class, and what makes this year's overall C award winner, Kurt Lear, impressive is that he fought off not only his own large class but every other C rider to win a very hardfought championship. This year's banquet was put on by the Trail Riders of Houston at the VFW Hall in Columbus, Texas. Series chairman Herb Fish emceed the event, and an enjoyable time was had by all. The Texas Championship Hare Scrambles Series would like to thank the landowners, and especially series sponsors Motorcycle Stuff, VP Racing Fuels, Dunlop Tire, T J's Cycle, Woods Fun Center, Yamaha of San Antonio, 35 North Honda, Kawasaki of San Antonio, Lyle Lovett Motorsports, Honda of Houston, Hurst Yamaha £, Marine, Starr Cycle Supply, Sportcycles of Houston, Scott USA, NGK Spark Plugs, Helix, BelRay, Motul, Bob Lunsford's Northwest Honda, Proclean 1000, and Wild West Honda/Kawasaki. eN TCCRA regular Bert Reynolds stopped by to get in some practice in preparation for his upcoming racing season. He dominated the Open A class and bested several AA riders, finishing sixth overall. Chris Ziegler put in a strong ride to capture the Overall B award. Jeremy Buckley came out of the Open C class to dominate all the morning riders to capture the Overall C award for the day. In the 50cc class, a war was waged between Chris Storrie, Andre Etheridge, Cole Roemer and Michael A. Hughes. These four riders completed six grueling laps, trading places many times throughout the event, with Gas Gas rider Chris Storrie finishing the race in first place. These four riders finished a mere 10 seconds apart! Two new classes were added to the series this year - Junior Girls and Women's D - to give the ladies a shot at hare scrambles racing on an abbreviated course, and judging by the turnouts in these new classes, this seems to have been a good decision. A total of 16 newcomers participated. Jessica Conners was the first winner of the new Junior Girls class. The Women's D class was won in fine fashion by Ashley Spellings. The Over 30 B class was the largest group on the line, with 36 riders charging to the first turn. James Nunner was able to get to the front, but not without challenges from Stoney Horn and Todd Ralinson. These riders came in neck and neck at the end of the first lap, but Nunner was able to open up a good lead, which he held to the finish. Horn and Ralinson finished second and third. All in aU, it was a great start to the 2002 series, and if the large numbers of riders are any indication, this is going to be an exciting year. 72 MARCH 13, 2002' cue I e n • _ os Strong; 3. Total Perfonnance Racing Indoor Short Track Round 3: Creek County Fairgrounds Cartvvright Rides to a Bonanza his fust race in over a year, was secBy DAN MAHONY SAPULPA,OK,FEB.2 xtreme cold, as well as proximity to the approaching Florida Bike Week, kept the entries down below 75, but the quality of the racing made up for lack of quantity at the Creek County Fairgrounds, as Johnny Isaacs' Total Performance Racing staged its third and final indoor short track of the winter. As they say, "the start is everything" - especially in indoor short track, and Honda rider Jerry Cartwright proved the adage true as he jumped into the lead at the start of the Pro Sport final and was never headed. Arkansan Darrel Peck, riding E ond at the end of the first lap but gave way to Rotax rider Danny Eslick on the second go-around. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Eslick dogged Sapulpa's own Cartwright but couldn't get close enough to put a wheel on him. Peck dueled forth and back with Colorado's Shane Arndt for third place, with the decision going to Kawasaki jockey Peck. Rotax-mounted Arndt, a tattoo-and-piercing artist back home, finished fourth, over Oklahoma cousins Bret Sowders and Jared Enright. With Florida Bike Week fast approaching, some 600cc Pro riders opted to save their bikes, bods and bucks and skip this event, but three Creek County Fairgrounds: In Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Russell Martin won the Open Amateur heat race and final as well as the trophy dash at the third and final round of Total Performance Racing Indoor Short Track winter events.
