Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds Jethro Jams at Elma Opener By SAM HALBERT Glen Helen Raceway Park: Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty had a successful day in San Bernardino, California, topping the Over 40 Evolution Expert class on his 1981 Maico 490. fun" (sending even this seasoned reporter scrambling for his dictionary), and indeed they were. Poppa Roysdon scored a Kenda tire for having the largest family in attendance; a pair of Hot Wheels scale·model cars were presented to the two Eds, Stovin and Zomes, for winning the Vintage and Evolution holeshot contests held at lunch lime; and Eric Casas copped the inaugural Cycle World magazine "Best Presented" award for his Johnny O'Mara-replica gear and cherry 1983 Honda CRI25R. Arbitrary? Maybe. Capricious? Perhaps. Fun? Definitely. Glen Helen Raceway Park Vintage iron (and Vintage Iron) Tops SVRG Opener BY BRIAN CATTERSON SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 20 It was a big day for Vintage Iron at the Southwest Vintage Racing Group's 2002 season opener at Glen Helen Raceway Park, as owner Rick Doughty and new employee Jonny Oler added a pair of first-place plaques to the shop's already-impressive trophy collection. A Johnny-come-lately to Vintage racing (heh, heh), Oler moved from Wyoming to California a few years ago to go to work for Yamaha, maintaining loan-pool bikes. More Reeulb IRONMAN VINT NOV: 1. "Jonny 0" capitalized on the opportunity, winning both Evolution Three Expert-class motos by healthy margins and then whipping it over the finish-line jump in entirely inappropriate fashion - or maybe the older guys were just jealous. Actually, they definitely were jealous, because Yamaha YZ490-riding runner-up Ted Hoyt, 39, muttered something about getting whupped by "a 20-year-old Pro." (Actually, Oler is 25.) There were no complaints about cherrypicking youngsters in the Over 40 Evoiution Expert class, as old guy Doughty rode his immaculate 1981 Maico 490 to 2-1 moto finishes and the overall victory. Doughty led until the last lap of moto one, when a lapped rider pushed him wide into a dirt embankment and Ed Stovin slipped through on the inside to take the win on his original Wheel smith Maico 400. In moto two, it was Stavin's turn to taste misfortune, as he got cross-rutted landing over a tabletop jump and fell while pressuring Doughty. That was just one of four classes in which Stavin competed, however. In addition, he topped the Evolution Two 500cc Expert class, finished third to Oler and Hoyt in Evolution Three Expert, and finished third again on a Yamaha WR400F in Modem Support Expert. Ed Zomes drove all the way from Phoenix, Arizona, to dominate the Vintage ranks, winning the Pre-1975 500cc Expert and Over 50 Vintage Expert classes on his twin-shock Yamaha YZ360. Zornes' son Jeff also went home a winner after riding Yamahas to victory in the Pre-1975 125cc Novice and Pre-1975 250cc Novice classes. The Zornes weren't the only family to go home with a truckload of trophies, though. Julia Roysdon defeated her mom, Chris, to top the Ladies class. while her father Brad won the Evolution One Intermediate race and her brother Jay lopped the Evolution Two 250cc Intermediate and Modern Support Intermediate classes. SVRG president Rick Doughty (yep, the same guy) had promised that this year's awards would be "arbitrary, capricious and 48 FEBRUARY 20. 2002 • cue ELMA, WA, JAN. 26 In the first AMA-sanctioned District 27 dirt track race of 2002, 16-year-old Jethro Halbert - making his debut as a Pro racer - dominated the Expert/Pro Sport main event. He got the holeshot and led from start to finish. Another local favorite, Aaron Weston, muscled his way through the crowd on a very tight and hard-topass-on track to finish second a straightaway behind the leader. Further back, there was a close battle for the third position; George Prindiville was in third, holding the inside line, with Grand National rider Erick Rickman all over him until the iast lap, when 16-year-old Amy Lee Pruczinski - also making her debut as a Pro racer, and currently the fastest female dirt track racer in Washington . dived underneath Rickman to take the fourth position. In the Open Money class - which is a favorite in the Northwest, in which a 14-yearold hotshot can race with the veteran Pros . Kyle Ragsdale got the holeshot and held the inside to fend off challenges from Jethro Halbert. Weston kept the third position, despite attempts to take it away by Ryan Ennis and Sam Halbert, who rounded out the top five. In the Open motorcycle main event, Sam Halbert got the holeshot but, about halfway through the race, slid out coming into turn three. and Gary Moore went on to win, followed by Derick Oquist and Tyler Anderson, who rounded out the top three. In the Evolution class, it was a free-for-all for a few laps, with Tim Williams - disguised as Frank Mock (or at least riding Mock's bike) - leaving a trail of camage behind him as he finished first, followed by Curtis Shipley and Sean O'Brien. In the Over 30 Open class, Mike Harritt got the holeshot and led the race, with Moore hot on his heels, until there were about two laps left, when they caught up to the back of the pack. Harritt got stuck on the outside, so Moore took advantage of the situation, sneaking underneath all of them to take the lead and win the race. Harritt came in second, fol· lowed by Shipley in third. The action in the Mini mains was in the 85cc Modified class. Chris Williams got the holeshot, with the rest of the pack breathing down his neck. Williems overshot the next corner and got into the marbles and was passed by nearly the whole field. Evan Aronson got the lead and was abie to hold off Scott Baker for the rest of the race. Chris Celorie rounded out the top three. Baker came back to win ahead of Aronson and Ceiorie in the 85cc DTX class. Results 50 BEG: I. Shelby Salisbury; 2. Hank Dickinson; 3. Bryce Tem· pleton: 4. IMAArena Lapeens Lock Up IMA Indoor Ice Race BY BART NEWMAN FUNT, MI, JAN. 26 When the ice races come to town, there's no stopping Robb and Camm Lapeen from competing at the Flint Motorcycle Club's annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters event, and this year was no different, as both riders took wins in their respective classes - Camm in the SOcc Junior class, and Robb in the 65cc class. When the green light nashed for the 50cc Junior contest, Kameran Miller was leading Camm Lapeen around the track on lap one. Out front and on the gas, Miller swung wide and Lapeen dived to the inside to take the lead on lap two. Miller appears to know only one throttle position, which is wide open, and he drifted too wide on lap three, planting his Yamaha in the outside wall exiting tum three. On the second try, it was second-generation racer Reis Villella who absconded with the holeshot, but Camm had the track dialed in and he moved into first after the first lap. Once out front, Camm roared around the track, opening up a lead on Villella. Miller was pushing hard to make up the gap after being sent to the penalty line; at the halfway point, he had made his way past Alexis Cronkright, Brett Boulis and Dylan Saultman to hold down third place. Camm was still out front, and Villella was giving it his all, but time was slipping away quickly. With the white fiag out, Camm was working his way through lapped traffic, which gave Villella a chance to close the gap at the end, but he came up just short and followed Camm Lapeen across the line in second. Third went to Miller, one of the fastest kids in the class. In the 65cc class, Austin Coliier got the jump on the field to lead the gaggle of Mini pilots down the back straight. Robb Lapeen wasn't going to be shown up by his little brother, and he motored around the outside of Collier in tums three and four to take over the lead. Once out front, Robb showed why he's been a front-runner at the indoor rounds for (Mal). 30+ EVO NOV: 1. Mike Reagan (Sul). 30+ EVO INT: 1. Scou Brophy (Yam): 2.
