Mulenburgh County Convention Center: Jake Lewis (85) and Ethan GiIIlm (95) battle coming out of turn four on the last lap of the short-track main event at round three of Western Kentucky Dirt Track racing in Greenville. Western Kentucky Dirt Track Round 3: Mulenburgh County Convention Center Le1Nis, Gillim Top Greenville ST Bv There were two rows in the 50cc Chain class, making up the IS-bike main. On the pole, Hayden Gillim got the holeshot and was followed off the line by Lewis, Wesley Clark, Tyler Cox and Jake Baumert. With the riders battling for second mixing it up, Hayden got a sizable lead, running by himself. On the second lap, Clark and Baumert got by Lewis in the third and fourth turns. Cody Reas was moving up, taking fifth from Cox. During lap three, Baumert passed Clark for second. Reas and Cox had caught Lewis and passed him on the back stretch, and now lapped traffic was coming into play. Hayden was managing to make it through the lappers fairly easily. On lap four, Reas pulled up on Clark and made the pass coming out of turn four to grab third. When the white flag came out, Reas was trying to pull Baumert in, but he didn't have enough time, and he finished third. Hayden Gillim toak the checkered flag, with Baumert coming in second. Clark was able to hold Cox off for fourth. The 65cc class had a great showing, with 10 bikes filling two rows. When the green light came on, Chaz Landers was off like a flash, getting the holeshot. Behind Landers were Frankie Lee Gillim, Hayden Gillim and Reas, all fighting for second. Those three battled it out through the entire race, which allowed Landers to build a sizable lead. On the fourth lap, Frankie Lee finally got a little breathing room by gaining a little distance on his younger brother and FRANKIE GILLIM GREENVlu.E, KY, JAN. 13 n an awesome January morning, 275 entrants came to flat-track race in Greenville, kentucky. An outstanding 20 50cc motorcycle contestants showed up to duel it out in the Shaft and Chain classes. In the 50cc Shaft short-track main event, Nate Hopewell broke off the line first, with Jake Lewis, Ethan Gillim, Sarah Baumert and Nick McFadden right behind. Lewis and Gillim, taking the outside line, passed Hopewell coming out of turn two. With Lewis in the lead and running a very tight line, Gillim ran a wide line, carrying his speed out of the turns, trying to take the lead. While the leaders were stretching out their lead, Baumert took over third place on lap two, leaving Hopewell and McFadden to battle for fourth. Still in the lead, Lewis was holding off Gillim with one lap to go. With a bike-length lead going into the first turn, Lewis held his line while Gillim was still running outside, carrying his speed for the straightaways. As the little bikes came out of two onto the back stretch, Lewis had a half-length lead. When they came into three and four, that lead was decreasing. Gillim tried to slingshot himself past Lewis at the line. In a photo finish, Lewis beat Gillim by half a wheel. Baumert finished third, with Hopewell and McFadden finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. O 44 FEBRUARY 20, 2002' cue • • n e _ s Reas. At the end, Landers' lead was too much for the elder Gillim to try to overcome. Landers led from wire to wire. Hayden Gillim was able to fend off Reas for third. Hard-charging Justin Jenkle came from the back to finish fifth. Frankie Lee Gillim was the first off the line in the 85cc class. Jordan Jenkle, Kevin Miller, Landers, Hayden Gillim and Cameron Baker were in pursuit. On lap two, Jordan was gaining ground on Frankie Lee, while Miller and Hayden were side by side for a good two laps. Hayden was finally able to pass Miller on lap three, while Frankie Lee and Jordan battled it out. Landers was by himself in third. When the checkered flag waved, it was Frankie Lee Gillim finishing first, with Jordan Jenkle a very close second. Landers, Hayden Gillim, Miller and Baker followed the front-runners to the flag. When the Open Pros came to the line, there were 10 bikes filling out two rows. When the light flashed green, Patrick Behile rocketed out front on his sweet-looking Rotax, followed by Jeff Landrum, Chris Boone, John Faulkner and Rod Hartzel. With the great start, Behile was able to get a good lead on Landrum through the first three laps. With some hard riding, Landrum was able to get some separation from Boone and Faulkner for second. Boone and Faulkner battled it out the entire race, allowing Behile and Landrum to build a sizable cushion. Behile was on a rail, never being challenged for the win. Landrum finished second, with Boone edging Faulkner at the line for third. With the battle going on in front of him, Rod Hartzel never could get a good line and he finished fifth on his Triumph. World Cup ICE Speedway Championship Series Round 4: The Family Arena Mission of the Bomber Bv GARV DEN5FORD ST. CHARLES, MO, JAN. 19 t was only a matter of time before young James Mann was going to have his day on the ice. The sophomore speedway ice racer has progressed to the point where he was standing on the podium frequently, though never on the top. That was about to change at the Doc's HarleyDavidson round of the 26th annual World Cup ICE Speedway Championship Series. The top four racers in World Cup points face off in the first heat, on the glass-smooth, untouched ice. Anthony Barlow from Merseyside, England, lined up on the outside. Next to him was World Champion Nick FaFard from Quebec, Canada. James Mann from Bolton, England, was in the second starting spot, and Neil Painter from Birmingham, England, started from the pole. At the start, Painter hung with Barlow to the first corner, as FaFard and Mann tucked in behind. Coming out of turn one, I Painter drifted wide, taking Barlow with him. Mann and FaFard seized the opportunity to blast past the leaders. Barlow soon made it past Painter and set his sights on second-placed FaFard. He soon passed the reigning champion and was immediately on Mann's tail. Barlow fans knew he was going to make a move before this one was over, and the "British Bulldog" didn't let them down, as he went for Mann on the low side in turn one of the fourth and final lap. Unfortunately, he went too low - so low, in fact, that he was excluded for an insidethe-pole-marker violation. Barlow went ballistic when he heard the call by referee Mark Crang, but the final results stood: Mann, FaFard, Painter and Barlow. Heat two had five riders. Conway, South Carolina's Brent Densford was the sole starter from row two. On row one, Westminster, Colorado's Shawn Hurley took the outside, with Bill Hermant from Sparks, Nevada, next to him.
