With four rounds to go and the points chase close in every class, the remainder of the season should be very interesting. Profesionallndoor Motorcycle Ice Race Series Round 2: IMA Arena Pickett Packs a Powerful Punch BY BART NEWMAN FUNT, MI, JAN. 26 raig Pickett proved once again that he is a force to be reckoned with in the world of AMA Professional Indoor Motorcycle Ice Racing, by winning the main event handily despite riding a borrowed scooter. Heat race one started off with a bang as Brian Villella exploded off the line to lead the pack from start to finish, breaking Chuck Springsteen's 2002 undefeated heat-race win streak at six. Springsteen was second after a race-long battle with Jack Mayer, who held on to finish third. Heat race four pitted three of the top competitors - Pickett, Mark Cheza and Mark Wyskiel - against one other top up-and-comer, Corey McDermitt. Wyskiel timed the starting gate perfectly and led the gang through lap one, but this was anyone's races, and there was a four-rider, five-lap paintswapping party going on in front of the sold-out crowd. In the end, Wyskiel took the win over Pickett, who was able to hold off Cheza, with McDermitt less than a wheel length back in fourth. Heat race five had Cheza, Buchanan and Villella all looking for the win. Buchanan had the start but was being hounded by Cheza, with C Villella just off the pace. With the white flag ready to come out, Buchanan went down, giving the lead to Cheza - but second wasn't where Villella wanted to be. Going into turn three, Villella came in low and hot, sending Cheza into the hay bales and taking the win. In heat eight, Andy Springsteen won his first heat race of the season after a tough battle with both Nick Cummings and McDermitt, who finished second and third, respectively. Andy wasn't the only first-time race winner on the night, as McDermitt also took the checkers for the first time, topping Villella in heat race nine. Chuck Springsteen pinched his hand between the boards and bars, going down hard in heat race 10 before skidding to a stop with his foot stuck in the bike; it just wasn't his night. Buchanan went on to win, with Wyskiel second. Springsteen ran one lap of the restart and then pulled off, hoping to recover for his next heat race. McDermitt nabbed heat 23's holeshot. O'Boyle held down second, all the while being manhandled by Pat Buchanan, who was third but looking to improve that position. On lap four, O'Boyle was finally bumped off the groove, opening the door for Buchanan to drop into second. O'Boyle didn't take too kindly to Buchanan's tactics and placed his front wheel on Buchanan's rear wheel and turned right, sending both himself and Buchanan to the ice and then into the wall, giving Mayer second, behind McDermitt's second win of the night. Noticeably absent from the main was defending and seven-time series champion Chuck Springsteen, who suffered through a horrific night, missing the main after finishing second in the B main to O'Boyle. Craig Pickett was on the pole for the main event, with his three heatrace wins outscoring fellow three-race winners Villella and Cheza in head-tohead competition. When the green light flashed, Pickett charged out front. Behind him it was pure motorcycle mayhem, as Buchanan, Villella and Wyskiel went down in a heap, bringing out the red flag for a restart. Pickett's rear-break pedal snapped, sending him into the boards on the cool-down lap and then into the pits to retrieve Springsteen's bike for the final. For the second start in a row, Pickett absconded with the lead. Cheza slipped into second, with McDermitt a close third and Mayer fourth. Out front, Pickett was laying down one great lap after another. Both McDermitt and Mayer begin to push their way toward Cheza's spot, making it a three-way battle for second. At the halfway point, it was Pickett's race to lose, and he was having none of that. Cheza was still in control of second, with a little cushion, because Mayer went down on lap six, slowing McDermitt's charge in the process. Buchanan and Wyskiel worked their way through the pack and were now battling over fourth. In the end, it was Pickett with the win and a big grin as he celebrated on his victory lap. Cheza held off McDermitt to finish second despite McDermitt's last-ditch effort on the final lap that brought him to within eight inches of second place. Fourth went to Buchanan, with Wyskiel fifth. This Ohio Arenacross series, which bounces around the Buckeye State from Jackson and Columbus up to Marion, plays host to hundreds of racers who desire some dirty action on two wheels in the dead of winter. Lancaster's Kyie Cottrill. formerly a fast 50cc competitor in District 1 I, has set his sights on the 65cc-c1ass crown. On this weekend he went unbeaten, whisking his new Kawasaki KX65 in for both day's main-event wins inside the jump-filled Marion Coliseum. Curt Gaski of Ravenna and Cameron Reas of Georgetown. Indiana, both rode well to make it onto the podium on both days. as well. Middleton, Ohio's Derek "Diesel" Stinson, considered by many to be one of the faster 50cc youngsters in the land, sailed his Cobra and Yamaha machines to a total of three wins over the weekend as the likable youngster laid down the law to the pack of kindergartners and preschoolers. Whiie Tyier "Danger Boy" Bowers and Cody Reas went at it in the 85cc (7 - 11) class ail weekend, Zach "Attack" Ames manhandled the excitable pack of 12- to 15-year-old 85cc competitors, screaming his F&S Suzukis to wins on both days. He also placed well in the Schooiboy class. The Over 40 class featured a battle of the brothers. Canadian Jeff Coles won both nights, with his bro' Brad in the runner·up spot. Brad Van Winkle took third both days. All the money for the weekend's Pro-class events feil into the deep pockets of David "Pee Wee" Whitcraft. The older brother of Chris Whitcraft (a regular winner in the series) just flat smoked the field in ail four 125cc and 250cc Pro-class mains, enabling the fuil-time mechanic and part·time dancer to make some van payments. Slowed due to injury for most of the season. David has been making a comeback of late; he and Chris have been making their mark in District 11 for years, mostly aboard their F&S Suzukis.
