The final slots to the 125cc and 250cc main events came by virtue of a pair of LCQs. Mitch Merritt, Tracy Johnson and Joke Boehm got there from the 125cc LCQ, while in the 250cc class it was Dunn, Eric Waunch and Merritt filling the top three. Whipple, riding a Yamaha, bolted to the head of the field at the unleashing of the 12rider, 10-lap 125cc Pro final, trailed by Smail, Victorville Motocross Complex Hanebrink Hellacious in Victorville Carter, Waunch, Weaver and Crater. Whipple's lead, though, evaporated by lap two, as Bv RAMONA BOvrON Smail took over the point position on the second circuit. Smail, a former multi-time National number holder, held a lock on the numberone spot to the finish to snare the top payoff; Whipple stayed in close proximity to Smail to grab second. Conner, riding the Herb's Cycletown-sup- ported Yamaha, started off the -face in seventh, but he was the fastest rider through traffic and he caught and displaced the KTM-mounted Carter on the final lap to fill out the rostrum. Johnson trailed Carter to finish fJfth, followed by the Montanan Weaver, Dunn, Crater, Boehm and Merritt. Smail made short work of the 250cc fJnal, although he did have to contend with Binckley, who last year carried the National number 95. AJA.A Supercross veteran Binckley ran a solid second place throughout the 10-lap fJnal to trail Smail at the fJnish. Whipple again stood on the podium, thanks to his third-place fJnish. Longtime Pro Scot Steffy posted a superb ride that netted him a fourth-place fJnish, ahead of Conner, Waunch, Carter, Merritt, Dunn and Jeremy Scism, who rounded out the top 10. Cobra-mounted Hayden "Hurricane" Cordell blew away the competition in the Pee Wee (7-8) and Pee Wee Open classes to stand among the select few double-class winners. Yamaha rider Craig Bergemeier, a three-class contestant on the day, won two ~ the Before The Hill and 125cc Intermediate classes - and finished second in his third class, the 250cc Intermediate, in which he trailed Honda rider Tyler Meyer.
