Toledo Arenacross: In what proved to be the race of the weekend at round four of the Formula USA Mid-America Regional Arenacross Series, Todd DeHoop (10) got a better drive out of the last comer on the last lap than Mark Burkhart (195) did to take the win in this hotly contest 125cc Pro main event. Ironically, both riders were later disqualified due to allegedly double-jumping under a red-cross flag. mounted Bradley Baker doubled his 50 to another win in 50cc (4-8) racing, beating out Todd Krieg and Wisconsin's Cole Prichard in the process. Jon Wells made the trek all the way from Kentucky to put his Cycle Specialties-backed KX125 at the front of the 125cc Novice racing, and Michael Baum did the same in the 250cc Novice class. If the packed stands both nights were any indication of the success of this series in the Midwest, then it is safe to say the next three rounds will be barn-burners. The remaining rounds will be held in Dayton, Ohio; Lexington, Kentucky; and Columbus, Ohio. eN Toledo Arenacrass Toledo, Ohio Results: January 10-11, 2002 (Round 4 of ]1 Friday 50 (4-8): 1. CMC Golden State Nationals North R und 2: Riverfront Park Davis Aces Marysville By ROBERT BEAUPRE MARYSVILLE, CA, JAN. 6 T he second round of the CMC Golden State Nationals North series wasn't an affair for the casual racer or spectator. In fact, anyone willing to brave the conditions in Marysville, California's Riverfront Park after steady rains turned the normally well-prepped circuit into mush could be awarded with a merit badge for dedication to the sport of motocross. The organizers decided to do everyone a favor by shortening the program to a one-moto format, but the single remaining moto was enough to test the resolve of most riders. Crashes, bike failures and gingerly approaches to the course were the standards for the day, but that isn't to say that some didn't excel among the misery of their competitors. In fact, some riders showed some impressive wet-riding prowess, despite their relatively dry West Coast roots. One such racer was F&S Suzuki's Scott Davis, who hails from nearby Yuba City but could've been mistaken for a New Englander judging by his sweep of the Pro classes on the drenched circuit. Davis wasn't likely considered the favorite coming into the day, as GP-bound Northern Californian Tallon Vohland had many anticipating a mud-riding clinic from the man with a wealth of wet-racing experience from his years of campaigning the European Grand Prix circuit. The race could've actually served as a fitting warm-up for his upcoming attempt at the 125cc GPs this year, as the one-moto format and threatening skies mirror the conditions Tallon may likely face overseas in the near future. Unfortunately, though, untimely crashes kept Vohland from challenging for the wins in either Pro division. Davis was on top of his game on this day, though, as good starts and smooth riding helped him stay clean at the front in both the] 25cc and 250cc divisions_ Davis was followed home in the ] 25s by Sportcenter's David Boothe in second and Agro Cycles' Beau Judge in third. The 250s had San Louis Motorsportsbacked Beau Baron taking the second spot, with DH Cycle's Jeff Brownlee rounding out the podium_ And although Vohland wasn't a contender on the day, he is still expected by the Northern California faithful to uphold local pride in his bid for the ] 25cc World Championship in the coming year. Reno, Nevada's Tony Evans equaled Davis' performance in the Intermediate ranks, with strong victories in both the 125cc and 250cc classes. Evans' new Thor/AMP. backed Yamahas seemed a good match for the wet course, and Evans himself showed strong mud-riding skills - which is impressive, considering Tony's home is Nevada (not exactly a hub for mud racing). Dry or wet, though, Evans has established himself as a top competitor in the California and Nevada Amateur scenes, and he can be expected to make his move to the Pros in the nottoo-distant future. Evans has just recently joined the ranks of YZ250F pilots, and he should gain speed as his four-stroke experience increases. Second place in the 125s was filled by the Oakley Sports-backed Suzuki rider Nick Davis, who enjoyed his own victory over the Schoolboy class in very convincing fashion_ Second in the 250 ranks was filled by another Suzuki, this one piloted by Woodland Cycle's Tim Stowe. cue. e The riders in classes below the Pros and Intermediates, though, were facing conditions that many may have never encountered before. That said, some of the misery on the track was understandable in the lower classes. This was most painful to watch in the Mini classes, especially the Pee Wees_ The tiny 50cc motors were no match for the sticky course, and most of the racers doubled their body weight with mud before the completion of the first lap. They made it, though, and the deserve their accolades here: Jessy Nelson took the 50cc (7-8) win; Cory Colombini claimed the 50cc (4-6) victory; and Jessy Arthurs topped the 50cc Beginner class. The race turnout was reduced somewhat by those not willing to risk the perils of the mud, but most classes still had enough racers willing to test skills not often used in the typically dry California racing scene. It's true that a race hampered by moisture is always a different experience in comparison to a normal event, and it's often a matter a slowing down to go fast. But as Scott Davis may likely note, the winner in a mud race still takes home the purse. eN Riverfront Pari< Marysville, California Results: January 5, 2002 (Round 21 50 BEG: 1.
