CMC Golden State Nationals, Pacific Northwest Region Round 1: Forster Livestock Pavilion Albany held it to the finish. The battle for second between Graves and McAlister was a close confrontation to the finish, with Graves narrowly edging McAlister at moto's end. Davis finished fourth, followed by Suzukimounted Washingtonian J.R. Vielle. McAlister pulled the trigger the fastest in moto two to lead the field and did much the same as Leach had in moto one; the Motion Sports/ Beaudry Motorsports/Oakley-supported rider vanished from the rest of the field. Davis greatly improved upon his first-moto performance after running in second place from start to finish, followed by Graves, Leach, Vielle and Yamaha rider Ryan Mortensen. Overall, McAlister (3-1) got the nod, aided by Leach's fourth-place finish in moto two, due to his lastplace start. Graves (2-3), Leach (1-4), Davis (4-2) and Vielle (5-5) filled the top five. Fick was fastest off the line in the first 125cc Pro moto, but the former minicycle speedster couldn't hold the pace much more than a couple of laps and was dropped back several positions as former National number holders McAlister, Graves and Davis relegated him to fourth. McAlister nearly lost the lead late in the moto after getting seriously out of shape, but he quickly regained his composure and netted a narrow win ahead of Graves and Davis. Fick finished fourth, ahead of Suzuki rider J.R. Meusling. Davis posted a win in moto two, trailed by Graves and McAlister, to earn the F&S Suzuki-backed rider his lone win of the day. The Californian made the trek north in an attempt to pocket some of the Suzuki contingency and purse money, and Davis was the top performer with a 3-1 tally. Graves (2-2). McAlister (1-3), Meusling (5-4) and Fick (4-9) filled out the top five overall. Graves and McAlister split moto wins in the Vet Over 25 Pro class, but it was Herb's Cycletown/Roseburg Cycle Center/Sinisalo-supported Graves (2-1) who garnered the overall win in a reversal of the earlier Over 30 Pro contest, which went in McAlister's favor. Gary Beyer (3-3) finished third, ahead of Dave Sibley (5-4) and Dave Fox (4-5). CN STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, JAN. 13 or nearly a decade, Suzuki [] mounted Chaun McAlister has been one of the premier arenacross riders in the Northwest. On this day, McAlister, who made the trek from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, contested four classes at the opening round of the CMC Golden State Nationals. When the smoke and dust had cleared, McAlister carted off a pair of overall Pro-class wins, posting the 250cc and Over 30 victories. Equally impressive was Cottage Grove, Oregon's Tony Graves, who also contested four classes. His best performance came in a knock-down, drag-out brawl in the Over 25 Pro class, in which he edged McAlister to win overall. Californian Scott Davis made his lengthy drive from the Bay Area payoff with the overall win in the highly competitive 125cc Pro class. Oregon's Ryan Leach, aboard a Yamaha, stopped a Suzuki stranglehold of the Pro classes with a win in the Open Pro class. The Amateur action was also superlative. Washingtonians Josh Hill and Ryan Villopoto, two of the country's top 80cc pilots, went head to head in the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes, ending the day in a draw. Hill topped the 80cc (12-13) class, while Villopoto got the top laurels in the Supermini class. The most interesting of the four meetings between the two came in the first 80cc (12-13) contest. Hill got caught in the gate and watched the field thunder away, while Villopoto took the lead and appeared to be well on his way to victory. With two laps left, though, Villopoto came up short on a jump and crashed, handing the lead to Shawn Haberlock - but Haberlock was engulfed by an on-the-move Hill, who came from 17th to take the win, ahead of Haberlock and Villopoto. Perhaps the day's top Amateur performer, though, was KTM-mounted Oregonian Pete Sannan, who celebrated his 15th birthday in a big way by winning the Schoolboy, Before The Hill and 125cc Intermediate classes overall; San nan split moto wins in two of those classes with Honda-mounted Ryan Huege, who was injured in a crash while chasing Sannan. in the second 125cc Intermediate moto. Leach, aboard the Herb's Cycletown/ Axo-backed YZ, snared the holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto, followed by Suzuki riders Graves, McAlister and Davis and Honda rider Tyler Fick. Early on, Leach amassed a large lead, and then the rider from 36 FEBRUARY 6. 2002' cue Forster UveslDcll """ilion S111_, anion Resulb: "'nu.lry 13, 2002 (Round 1 of 2J I ⢠PIW (4-6): 1.
