Close to 600 entrants filled the park to take part in round three of the STC Pro Circuit Winter Series, which also featured a special "Best N Texas" 125cc Intermediate challenge. Racedirect.com put $600 up for grabs for the three fastest Intermediates, with a check going to the sponsor of their choosing. Vernon McKiddie was up to the challenge, besting both motos to take the overall. McKiddie also used a 1-1 score to nail down the 250cc Intermediate-class victory and end the day with four wins in four races. Bradley Mikolas snagged the holeshot in the first moto of the 125cc Intermediate class, ahead of McKiddie and Jonathan Kerr. By the end of the first lap, McKiddie was already trailing Mikolas by only a bike length, ahead of Kerr, Jason Gaddis and Charles Castloo. The three leaders had already started to distance themselves from the rest of the field as the second lap came to an end. On the third lap, McKiddie made his move for the lead while heading into the woods. The two Yamaha riders drag-raced through the woods, as Kerr began to gain ground on Mikolas. Mikolas' moto didn't become any easier; he lost his silencer while trying to hold off Team GreenjThor-sponsored Kawasaki jockey Kerr. When the white flag came out, McKiddie had put enough ground on the field to go unchallenged on the last lap and win the moto ahead of Mikolas, who had his hands full with Kerr all the way to the finish. T Jonathan Kerr came out swinging in the second moto, taking the hoJeshot ahead of McKiddie and Castloo. Exiting the rhythm section, Mikolas snatched third away from Castloo, who now faced Jason Gaddis. McKiddie wasted no time and went for the lead early, powering past Kerr as they entered the woods for the first time. McKiddie continued to walk away from the field, putting a gap between himself and Kerr. Mikolas was working his way up to Kerr's rear wheel, as a battle was now beginning to develop for second. Mikolas made his move on the third lap in the woods to take the position from Kerr. The three raced to the checkers, with McKiddie taking the win and the overall as well as a $300 check from Racedirect.com written to his sponsor EBR. Mikolas was second, and he earned $200 on the day, which he also had made out to EBR. Kerr rounded out the podium in third and picked a check for $100, which he had made out to the Clayton Memorial Foundation. "I really want to thank my brother James McKiddie, who does a lot for me, from buying bikes to working on them," McKiddie said during the trophy presentation after the second moto. "I also want to thank my girlfriend, Connie, who helps me all week, training and making sure I go to the gym and ride motos. Without these people, I could not do it. I especially want to thank my sponsors EBR, Fox, K's Yamaha and Jeremy Peterson." Michael Royal took the holeshot in the first moto of the Supermini class, ahead of Ronny Jackson and Ryan Grantom. As 37 riders stormed the track, Jackson and Grantom wasted no time getting to the front. Jackson and Grantom set a blistering pace as the two circulated the track. On the second lap, Grantom made his move for the lead in the woods, sending the Honda of HoustonjJM Racing-sponsored Jackson back to second. Grantom continued to ride hard, pulling a slight edge on Jackson. Royal was left a lonely third, ahead of Cody Stark and Justin Thomas. When the checkered flag fell, the winner was Grantom, with Jackson a short step back. The second moto was a continuation of the Grantom-Jackson duel, as both riders gated well and ran up front. Royal found himself in fifth, ahead of Steven Ball and Daniel Garrett. Royal went to work on the second lap, passing both Rusty Schoonover and Stark to settle into third. Exiting the woods on the third lap, the race for first took a sudden turn when Jackson hit the dirt long enough to let Grantom squeak by. The two had pulled far ahead of the field, which allowed Jackson to easily remount in second. o U 0 I • n • _ s FEBRUARY 6, 2002 37
