Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship Series Round 5: Woodland Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT WOODLAND, WA, JAN. 12 awasaki-mounted Oregonian Terry Hamness Sr. was too much for the competition in the 250cc and Over 50 Evolution Amateur classes at round five of the Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship Series. Riding a 1979 KX250, Hamness hammered the competition en route to a four-for-four moto-win tally at Woodland Motocross Park. CZ rider Chris Clark was equally impressive. After suffering his only loss thus far in the series at the previous round, Clark rebounded nicely to post a pair of overall wins aboard his 1972 CZ 400. Clark conquered the Open and Over 30 Expert classes on this day, although the rider from Gladstone, Oregon, had tough competition in both contests. Hondamounted Joe Casey was the only rider all day long to put a stop to Clark's steamrolling. Casey narrowly edged Casey at the finish in the first Over 30 Expert moto - one of the day's closest finishes but Clark came back strong in moto two to post the victory and garner his second of two overall wins on the day. Another of the exceptional Expertclass battles came in the Four-Stroke Evolution class, pitting C&J Yamaha 500cc riders Monty Price and Dennis Sweeten, who spent much of both motos in close proximity. Price prevailed in moto one after Sweeten's machine sputtered to a halt. Moto two was again a barn-burner, as Price poured it on at the start to grab the lead. Sweeten, a former motocross Pro and a current trials Expert, darted past Price on the second of six laps and then pulled away convincingly. However, Sweeten's moto-one DNF allowed Price to garner the overall win in the class. The two Yamaha riders met again for the final time in the day's final motos, and they again split moto victories in the superb conditions. Price got the nod for the win in moto one, but Sweeten scored the moto-two vic- K Terry Hamness won the 250cc and Over 50 Evolution Amateur classes at round five of the Northwest Vintage Motocross Championship series. tory to secure his only overall win of the day in his two-class quest. Price (1-2) finished a close second overall, followed by Maico-mounted Kary Krahel, whose consistent 3-3 placings netted him third overall, ahead of Suzuki jockey Jay Lael. In the adjoined Intermediate class, Yamaha YZ465-mounted Scott Howland aced both motos. Hamness' day was a stellar one from the get-go. He absconded with the holeshot in the first 250cc Evolution Amateur moto and vanished. After a poor start, Honda-mounted Dave Epping made a late-moto charge but couldn't close the gap on Hamness. Moto two was much the same: Hamness got the jump on the field and then narrowly held Epping at bay at the finish for his first of two overall wins on the day. Chad Epping (3-4) netted third overall. Hamness later came back to dominate the Over 50 Evolution Amateur class, although he did have challenges from BSA rider Ed Locke in moto one. Moto two was all Hamness', as he led from the drop of the gate to the finish. Honda-mounted Rick Radmacher (2-2) finished second overall, followed by Moe Loehman, Dan Glenn and Preston Griffin. In the adjoined Women's contest, Kawasaki rider Amy Light and CZ jockey Alix Saario split moto wins; Saario won overall. Among the day's best motos was the 250cc/Open Expert/Intermediate swapfest. CZ rider Jim Row pulled the trigger fastest to lead moto one, hounded for much of the race by Clark and Husky rider Jim Sawtell. The three were never more than a wheel apart until Sawtell's Husky quit running, and then the battle was all Rowand Clark's. Row missed a shift with a lap left and Clark capitalized on that for the win. Casey finished third, which was good for the 250cc- 250 EX: 1. Joe Casey (Hon): 2. Randy Brown (Yam). OPEN INT: I. Casey put his 1974 Honda CR250 out front in moto two, although less than a lap later Sawtell took command and then remained there to the finish. Both Clark and Row also dropped Casey back in a battle for the overall win. Just as Row closed the gap on Clark, he encountered problems and dropped back, allowing Casey to net the number-three spot. "I lost a footpeg," said a dejected Row. "I could feel it dangling late in the race, but then I put my foot down and there was nothing there." Overall, Clark took the top Openclass honors, while Row finished second, ahead of Landon. Casey posted the 250cc-c1ass win, ahead of Yamaha rider Randy Brown, while Brynn and Josh Warring scored the Open and 250cc Intermediate-class wins, respectively.
