main events. Thompson and Locke finished in close quarters in the Over 40 Evolution final, trailed by Topping. Thompson and Sawtell also finished a wheel apart in the 250cc final, but Thompson enjoyed the advantage by virtue of his unparalleled holeshots, which he enjoyed all day. Sawtell stayed a close second aboard his 1979 Husky CR, finishing within a bike length of Thompson at the finish, while some 10 seconds back was Light, the top-placing 125cc rider. eN but late in the race Loper lost composure and it took a multitude of kicks before his Ossa would re-fire. This allowed Schweitzer to take a last-lap lead. Loper, though, quickly narrowed the gap on Schweitzer to take the lead with only one tum remaining. It was much the same for Landberg in the Over 40 Vintage final. Shortly after rocketing into the lead, the Bultaco jockey fell. This allowed Locke to take the lead - just the advantage he needed to grab the point position and then remain there to the finish. Landberg got going again and made a mad dash through the field to settle into second, but that was as far as he'd get, as Locke had a lock on the number-one slot for his only win of the day. Landberg, Hodaka-mounted Steve Mitchell (who earlier had beat Dave Roberts for the 125cc Vintage-class win), and Husky pilot Alfie Bensinger trailed. Thompson finalized the day's program by posting wins in the back-toback 250cc and Over 40 Evolution elm County Fairgrounds Exposition Arena Batdeuround, ~ashlngton Results: January 5, 2002 Vintage WMN: 1. Reed Valley Campground Reid Delivers at Reed Valley By DAB HUNTER REED VALLEY, CA, DEC. 2 With a three·c1ean flourish at the close of the event, San Diego Trails Riders' Reid Davis came from behind to take the Intermediate A win from Craig Couture at the ITS Reed Valley Trial. Couture took the lead on the opening section and didn't relinquish it until the final trap of 30. The third loop's J Oth section featured tricky dirt and rock tums, with a particularly tricky right-hander over a small log. Couture dropped a decisive point, and Davis' clean gave him the win by a dab. Held in nearly perfect conditions, with scattered clouds and midday temperatures in the 70s, a tumout of 71 rider tackled everything from wide-open off·camber hillside slabs to muddy lines through tight trees. Comebacks ruled in the Intermediate B class. Tom Lash was in a three-way tie for first after the opening loop, but he had slipped to third after two loops were in the books. A clean on section five on the third loop (every other rider had either a three or e five in the section) catapulted him into the lead, which he never relinquished. Finishing the first loop in ninth, VOTE president Jeff Nielsen moved himself up to sixth after the second loop. Nielsen went on a tear on the last loop with a single-digit score, allOWing him to catch GeroJd Love on the last section. Nielsen bested Love with 10 tie-breaking cleans to Love's nine. Andrew Oldar also stormed to a comeback win in the Kid A class. Two five-point loops put him five points behind Neil Storz with five sections to go. Storz gave back five points on the first section of the third loop, dropping him into a tie with Oldar. The two cleaned the next three sections, leading to the final and deciding section. Oldar nailed it for a dean, giving him a clean loop, and Storz scored another five, putting him in a tie with Daniel Leavitt. Storz had one more clean than Leavitt, locking Storz into second place. A first-andsecond-moto punch gave him the overall. Doug Neff and Bobby Brady followed Tyson home in both molos for second end third. Brian Gray took top honors in the 14-29 class. Gray got a bad jump out of the gate in moto one and had to come up through the pack. Alexis Andreu hounded Gray in the first moto, but Gray eventually pulled out the win. Jimmy and Jeffrey Tyson finished third and fourth, and George Mesdea rounded out the top five. Gray won moto two, but Eric Usher finished second this time. The Tysons switched places, with Jeffrey third and Jimmy fourth. After a bad first moto, David Brewer finished fifth. Gray won both motos in the Money class. The challenge in both motos c~me from Brewer, who finished runner-up twice. James Cobb finished third in the first moto and dropped to fifth in the second moto. Andreu placed fourth in the first moto. and Derek Keys followed in fifth. Usher had a good second moto, as he had in the 14-29 class, and placed third. Keys placed one spot better for fourth. The single-moto Dash For Cash was all Gray's. He had some stiff competition from Brewer and the winner of the 125cc B class, Terry Brazier. The three finished in that order at the line. North Aorida MX Park Tysons Knock Out NFMX By CRAIG JOHNSON Reed Valley Campground: Clive Hannon takes on a rock guarding the entrance to section nine at the ATAilTS trial In Reed Valley, California. Hannon earned a convincing victory in the Advanced A class. 40 JANUARY 30, 2002' cue I e n • _ s HlWARD, FL. DEC. 16 Jeffrey and Jimmy Tyson knocked out the competition in the 125cc C and 250cc C classes, respectively, at North Florida MX Park. Jeffrey and Jimmy swept both motos of their classes. The Tysons also rode to an impressive two-three finish in the competitive 14-29 class. The weather was perfect for NFMX's last race of 2001. The temperature rose to the mid-70s, as the sun was in and out all day long. It was just a great day for racing on a well-prepared track. The J 25cc C class had plenty of action in both motos. Jeffrey won the first moto, and Joel Donarama finished second. Josh Gunnerson followed the two in third, and Bill Poarch and Zack Alkire rounded out the top five. The second moto was all Tyson's, and his first-and-second-moto wins knocked out the competition. Donarama tried to stay close but ended up second. David Roth came back from a terrible first moto to finish third. Gunnerson and Poarch each dropped a spot to finish fourth and fifth. Glen Helen Raceway Park Gonzales, Wagner Whip 'em at REM MX By ROCKY HASH SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 5 To kick off the first race of their J 5th year of promoting motocross in Southern California (and their fifth straight year at Glen Helen), Racing Enterprises Motorsport's Frank Thompson came up with a redesigned track configuration that was once again met with rave reviews by riders and spectators alike. In the aocc Beginner ranks, Gerrit Wagner took the top honors after battling hard ali day aboard his Honda CRaO. In the first moto, Wagner led from start to finish, as he pulled the holeshot and never looked back until after he had taken the checkered flag.
