down quite a bit to cater to the machines that utilize anywhere from three to 11 inches of suspension travel. Thompson's machine, a 1980 Honda CR250, featured the maximum suspension travel, while others machines - such as 250cc Vintageclass winner Roger Landberg's 1974 Bultaco 250cc Pursang - were the standard seven up front and four in the rear, a standard set by AHRMA. Qualifying kicked off the day's program. The first to tackle the course were the Over 50 and Over 60 contestants. Husqvarna-mounted Dan McCarthy put his CR out in front of the field at the unleashing, followed by Oregon's Bill Schweitzer and Ossa rider Leland Loper. Though he crashed at the start, Loper was the fastest rider through traffic; he caught Schweitzer's 1974 360cc Bultaco Pursang and then went out after McCarthy. Although he enjoyed as much as a half-lap lead, McCarthy saw his advantage whittled down to nothing on the final lap. Loper outjumped McCarthy with two turns remaining to seal a win. Thompson and BSA rider Ed Locke went head to head in the Over 40 Evolution-class qualifier. Things went in the Honda rider's favor. Locke, riding a machine nearly a decade older, put pressure on Thompson from the drop of the gate to the late stages of the qualifier. That's when the Oregonian's daring pass attempt went awry and the BSA rider was sent sprawling to the ground. Locke did remount in time to salvage a second-place finish, ahead of Husqvarna-mounted Blake Topping. Thompson came right back to top the Evolution 125/250cc qualifier, although it was also a hard-earned win. Husqvarna rider Jim Sawtell used a variety of line changes in an attempt to steal a win from Thompson's grasp, but Thompson had all of the answers for one of Oregon's fastest Vintage motocrossers, Sawtell. Kawasaki-mounted Clay Light finished third, followed by Honda rider Rick Radmacher. The Bultaco-mounted Landberg decimated the competition in his dual wins of the 250cc/Open and Over 40 Vintage-class qualifiers. Locke was all over Landberg in the Over 40 qualifier, but Locke again took a soil sample in the loamy turf and allo~ed Landberg to seal an easy win at the finish for the Washingtonian. The Over 50/0ver 60 main event was the first in a series of finals. McCarthy got the holeshot in the final, but his lead was short-lived, as the Husqvarna rider slid out coming out of turn one. This handed the lead to Schweitzer, but Schweitzer's turn in the limelight was quickly eclipsed by Loper's 1977 Ossa. Loper put huge ground on second-placed Schweitzer, Motorcycle news will never be the same! You can access Cycle News Online anytime, day or night, on the World Wide Web at .
