Glen Helen Raceway Pari<: Lars Larsson won the first moto and placed second overall in the Over 50 Masters class at REM's weekly Saturday motocross in San Bemardino, California. ranks, as the two Honda riders swapped moto wins, with Gonzales getting the edge in the allimportant second moto. On the day, Gonza~ les, on his all-black CR500AF, was the overall class winner by virtue of his 2-1 tally. Villa was next best with a 1-2 score, while Bobby Hunt filled out the top three slots with a solid 5-3 showing for the day. The Over 50 Masters djvision is usually an interesting affajr, and this week was no exception. Multi-time Vet World Champion Alan Olson was able to top the competitive field after putting in 2- 1 rides for the day aboard his White Brothers Yamaha YZ250. Former World Grand Prix motocross competitor Lars Larsson won the first moto aboard his booming KTM SX 520, but a poor start in the second moto relegated him to second overall with a 1-2 score. Bengt Johansson put some more orange in the top three, as he jockeyed his KTM to a third-place finish overall after putting up consistent 3-3 rides for the day. Motocross Action's Jody Weisel was fourth overall with his 5-4 rides, while Ray Pisarski rounded out the top five slots for the day with a 4-6 showing. Motocross of Marion County Franklin Shocks 'em at Vintage Opener BY CRAIG JOHNSON AND ANGELA HARDEN REDDICK, Flo JAN. 6 The day started off with a light rain at the Vintage track at Motocross of Marion County. By midmorning, the rain had stopped and the Vintage racers were ready to go on the sandy soil. The riders were tested at the first round, as they ran three motos to kick off the 2002 Fiorida Vintage MX Series. Rand Franklin rode his motorcycle into the winners' circle with three hard-fought mota wins. Franklin rode a 1974 KX250 in the very competitive Vintage 250cc/500cc AlB class. In the first moto, Franklin fought off the attempts of Bultaco rider Gary Rosse, who beat out Honda Elsinore rider Matt Kretschmer for second. In the second moto, Franklin felt the heat from Kretschmer. who in turn beat out Rosse for second. The third and final mota decided who finished runner-up to Frank.lin; Kretschmer got the nod for second and second overall. CZ rider J.P. Antoon finished fourth overall with a 4-4-5 score over 400cc Maico rider Van Aderhold's score of 5-6-4. Greg Barnes powered a 1981 490cc Maico out front and dominated all three motos of the Gran Prix 250cc/500cc A class. Bames was challenged each time out by Joel Nicholson, on a YZ465. Each time, Nicholson closed in on Barnes to within a couple of bike lengths. The roost from Barnes' Maico was too much and Nicholson kept a few feet back from it. Barnes took the overall to start out the new season very strong. Nicholson followed Bames home in each moto for second overall. Ed Sherry Jr. used consistent 4-4-4 moto finishes for third overall. Kevin Hodge put in thirdplace finishes in the first two motos but dropped to sixth the third time out, finishing fourth overall. In the Pre-1983 Open class, Sherry put his Husky out front for three mota wins over Ed Sherry Sr. The elder Sherry had trouble in moto two, placing only fifth, as Bill Goldsby took second in moto two. Sherry Sr.'s 2-5-2 score was still good for second overall over Goldsby's 3-2-4 score. . The Pre-1977 Over 50 class was. thriller. The overall was up for grabs going into the last moto. In the first moto, Marty Mohler put his CZ in the lead for the moto win. Gary Hooper followed in second, and Dan Mackie was third. In the second mota. Mohler had problems and could only muster fifth. Hooper finished second again, as Suzuki-mounted Mackje won the mota. It was anybody's guess as to who was going to win the final mota and the overall. The third moto had another different winner. and that was enough to take the overall as well. The winner was CZ rider Hooper. Mohler finished second, but it was only good enough for third overall. Mackie came in third and finished second overall. CN July 26, 1973 Boulder Creek, California OccuPAnoN . . . . _ , , . , , .Machinist Discipline Enduro Racing OnIER INTERESIS ...
