types of riders congregate in certain classes. The 125s are made up of mostly motocrossers, along with a few of the younger flat-trackers; the 250s are made up of mostly expert flat-trackers on fairly new equipment; the 400cc class is the "vintage" class in rider age and machine age, with a few newer YZF Yamahas thrown in. In the 125cc contest, Rothstein jumped out to a slight lead entering the first turn to avoid the normal traffic jam of eight riders trying to occupy one line, and then he just pulled away. He was followed by his fellow motocrosser Joseph Schueler, with Jason Isennock, John Lewis and Nick Henderson in tow. Isennock pressured Schueler most of the way, with Schueler running over the tires past halfway, letting Isennock into second. In the 250cc event, Hormes had his first start wiped out because of a bike blocking the track after one lap, but on the restart, the first three remained the same: Hormes, Jared Mees and Dillon Cava, with Tim Bemisderfer and Jimmy Owens a little behind. The first three stayed very close, with only about two lengths between each rider - not enough to try a "Timonium bump 'n' run," but one mistake away from disaster. Mullen put his MX-based Yamaha in front of Timonium meister Price in the 250cc Pro contest, with Mike Varnes, Tom McGrane and Jake Johnson gradually losing sight of the torrid battle for the lead. Knowing Price is a master at the "bump 'n' run," Mullen kept him about two lengths back in their battle for the lead. Turning some of the fastest laps of the night, the pair sliced through the 15 laps in almost no time at all. Clarence Bull was the quickest 400cc rider off the second tum, with Rob Smith, Harold Brossman and John Kraft trailing. After probing for most of the race, Smith made his move coming off the second turn, slicing under Bull for the lead on lap 10 and went on to win. Phillips took the lead from Phil Libhart, Jake Johnson and Ed Hyde as the 600cc Pros rumbled out of the second turn. After about 10 laps, Johnson got by Libhart in the third turn as Libhart started having trouble staying upright. On the last lap, Johnson worked his way to Phillips' rear tire, but his try at a "bump 'n' run" came up a little short; he bobbled slightly but was still safely in second. With the tightness of this track, no lead is safe, as a pair of smaller bikes proved on this night. Making only his second start on the concrete, Austin Greenland had pulled out to almost a straight-long margin over the tightly bunched pack of Evan Baer, John Long, Joey Parks and R.J. Hart by halfway. For several laps, he had trouble getting by a backmarker. With three laps left, and with his patience worn out, he tried to get under the rider, but they collided, and both went down hard. The race was red-flagged and called complete, with second-placed Baer being declared the winner. Thomas Webb and Spence quickly left Brandon Seibold, Cameron Tyson and the rest of the 50cc (7-8) class behind. Webb stayed several lengths ahead until, with three laps to go, they came upon some lapped riders. Webb made the wrong choice and went high, while Spence went low. Spence took over the lead; Webb touched a rider and fell, dropping to sixth. eN Timonium Short Track Timonium, Maryland Results: Oecember 8, 2001 [Round 21 50 OIL·INJ: I. Colin Webb (Vam); 2. Ohio Arenacross Series Rounds 7-9: Henderson Indoor Arena Complex Strunk, Nicholson, Van Winkle Rip at Jackson Bv RUPERT X. class. Rome, Ohio's Chuck Nicholson conquered the Over 30 division on all three days. Jackson's own Mitch Warrens mastered the Over 25 B class on Friday and Sunday and was runner-up on Saturday. The Over 25 A class was won three times out by Brad Strunk, who, mounted on his Cycle Specialties Suzukis, would force Buckeye Powersports-backed Dickie Hoy to take the back seat in this class in every moto. CN PELLETT JACKSON, OH, DEC. 7-9 ust after completing a huge weekend of racing in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio Arenacross Series returned to the Henderson Indoor Arena Complex, a southern Ohio venue near Jackson, where a former horse-show arena has been transformed into a raging indoor motocross extravaganza. While the stage is somewhat different, many of the players remained the same, as early series rivals Brad Strunk and Chris Whitcraft returned to the confines of this jump-laced indoor course, each hoping to gain an edge against the other in the series. While the two racers share a taste for the same brand of motorcycle (Suzuki) and both enjoy the benefit of great talent, they possess entirely different characters and are extremely competitive. Over the three days and six long feature races in which they went head to head, in both 125cc and 250cc Pro competition, Strunk would gain a brief advantage in wins and points, as he traded wins with F&S Suzuki's Whitcraft on Friday, won both classes on Saturday, then again split wins with Whitcraft on Sunday. Strunk's record on the weekend included four wins and two seconds; Whitcraft posted two Pro-class wins, three second spots and a third in the total of six 125cc and 250cc Proclass mains. In Amateur action, there were a bunch of racers among the almost 400 competitors on hand that just had it going on all weekend, including Suzuki jockey Steve Jones, the undisputed master of the 250cc B class all weekend long, and his fellow F&S pilot Zach "Attack" Ames, unbeaten in the 85cc (12-13) class on all three days. The old-and-fast guys had a large turnout and some incredible racing. When the smoke settled on the weekend, Brad Van Winkle had posted three wins in the record books with a complete domination of the Over 40 J cue I • Henderson Indaor Arena Camplea Jac:1lsan, Ohia Results; December 7-9, 2001 [Raunds 7-91 Friday 50 (4-6): 1.
