Dickie Hoy Alabama Fall Series Round 1&: Chandler Mountain Motocross Ward, Crain Hoist Steele Wins By but, just as in moto one, the YZ pilot took another soil sample and once again would not be a factor. At the same· time, Hargrove passed Castrone and moved into third. Everyone held their positions for the rest of the race and the flag fell with Ward taking the win, followed by Thompson and Hargrove. Sizemore again topped the B class. Anticipation was building as the field lined up for the special winnertake-all Dash For Cash. Money had been raised from many sources, and a large chunk of cash was there for the taking. Castrone put his RM250 out front at the gate while favorite Ward suffered a terrible start. Hondamounted Brian Robertson held down second, with Thompson in third. On lap two, Thompson passed Castrone and Robertson to take over the lead. Ward, meanwhile, was passing riders two by two, and he soon moved into second. By lap four, Ward was applying pressure on Thompson, and their battle had moved them far ahead of Robertson and fourth-placed Hargrove. Ward tried every trick in the book on Thompson but time ran out before he could make a pass stick. Thompson took the win, followed by Ward, Robertson, Hargrove and Castrone. The highly competitive Over 40 class has been interesting all year. STEVE AND PEGGY CORLEE STEELE, AL, DEC. 9 TM-mounted Chad Ward, still recovering from early-season injuries, came out on top of the Proclass competition as Chandler Mountain Motocross in Steele, Alabama, hosted the final round of the 2001 Alabama Fall Series. Ward led every lap of the 125cc and 250cc A classes, but a bad start in the Dash For Cash saw the Alabama speedster unable to overcome a determine-d Josh Thompson to complete a sweep of the day's cash classes. The sandy mountaintop course at Steele was the perfect arena for the final round of the series. The Hollingsworth family has promoted races at this location for several years, and Chandler Mountain is a favorite of many riders in the area. Each year at the final race of the season, the promoters offer a large Pro purse. This has been well-received by everyone, as the extra cash is welcomed during the holidays. Track preparation is outstanding, and the sandy surface lends itself to some exciting racing action. When the gate fell for the first combined 250cc A and B moto, Ward grabbed the holeshot and began to pull away immediately. Suzukimounted Tim Castrone held the second spot initially, but YZ-mounted Josh Thompson moved up before the end of lap one. Following Castrone was 250cc B rider Drew Askew. Unfortunately, Askew did not remain a factor long, as he went down before the third lap. When Askew feli, KTM-mounted Dustin Sizemore inherited the B-c1ass lead. Ward continued to pull away from the field throughout the moto and took the checkers ahead of Thompson, Castrone and Hondamounted Joey Hargrove. Sizemore topped the B class ahead of track announcer John Davidson. Moto two began much the same as moto one, with Ward grabbing the lead immediately. Thompson held down second, and B rider Askew was third. Askew made his move on Thompson before the end of lap one K 46 JANUARY 16, 2002' eye I The final round was no different. David Crain, a familiar name in the off-road sector for many years, brought his Gas Gas machines to the motocross arena this year and has been impressive. Crain missed a couple of the series races and has been chasing a points deficit as the series winds down. He came out with both barrels blazing for the final and took the class crown in grand style. Crain grabbed the start in moto one and was never headed. A tremendous battle for second took place between Alabama Web master Randall Kipker and Tennessee's Mike Taylor. Kipker prevailed at race's end, heading Taylor and Gary Parcus. When the gate fell on the final moto of the year, Taylor put his KTM in front, only to be passed by Crain before lap one ended. As Crain pulled away, another battle between Kipker and Taylor began. The two went back and forth the entire race, and at the finish it was Crain, Taylor and Kipker. eN Chandler Mountain Motocross Steele, Alabama Results: December 9, 2DDI (Round IS of ISl 50 SHAFT: 1.
