On lap two, Leonard was still in command, but Stuckey had made the pass on Stephens and moved into the number-two position and was making time on the leader. He came in for scoring just 16 seconds off Leonard's time. On lap three, Leonard gassed and Stuckey took the lead. Leonard wasn't far off, and Summey had moved into third. When they came in for scoring, Stuckey was in the lead at 28:21, followed closely by Leonard with a 28:37. Summey wasn't far behind with a 28:55, and Stephens timed in at 29:12. Ward got back on track and was turning 30-minute laps in an effort to get to the front. He would finish the day seventh. On the last lap, Leonard caught Stuckey and got by him for the lead, and then he held off Stuckey to the finish. At the barrels, he finished eight seconds ahead of the champ. Summey was a little more than a minute back, with Stephens and Rentschler taking positions four and five. Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track Series Round 1: Timonium Short Track HOllDes Hmnmels 'em Bv BEN BREECH TIMONIUM, MD, DEC. 7 aking his first start since a latesummer racing accident sidelined him, Corey Hormes returned with a vengeance, topping the 250cc class in the opening round of the 25th annual Timonium Indoor Short Track Series. For the past seven years, the Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club-sponsored event has also been called the Rodney Farris Memorial Series, in honor of the local rider who thoroughly dominated the 250cc Pro class here in the '80s. Picking up where Farris left off, Georgie Price has been the dominant rider in the 250cc Pro class for most of the 1990s, and he again won that class fairly easily on this night. This series is run a little differently than any other Amateur event. Starting positions in the 125cc-and-higher classes are determined by time trial, with only the fastest 24 in each class going to the heats. Amateurs and Experts do not run separate classes, and each rider can enter only one class. The field is divided into a maximum of four six-rider heats, with the top four going to two eight-rider semis, from which the first four go to the 15-lap final. The track is a small one-tenth-mile concrete course; lap M times are about seven seconds, and falls happen very regularly. Hormes emerged from the pack off the second turn with the lead over Dillon Cava, Jared Mees and Chris Klinefelter. Cava stayed close to Hormes, while David Reeves slipped under Klinefelter in the third turn on lap three and started to pressure Mees for third. Reeves buckled under the pressure, crashing on the final lap. Price was his usual quick self off the start of the 250cc Pro final on his Metro Racing.com Honda, taking the lead from Roy Miller, Mike Varnes, Ken Yoder and Jake Johnson. A few laps later, Varnes slipped, letting Yoder and Johnson by. With Price thoroughly in command, Johnson slipped under Yoder for third on lap seven. Yoder slipped off the groove, letting Kevin Varnes and Mike Varnes by. Close to the end, Kevin bobbled and Mike got past, but Kevin repassed him the following lap. Road racer Bryan Bemisderfer grabbed the 400cc lead from Harold Brossman, Mark Myers and Clarence Bull. Riding one of the few modern machines, a Yamaha YZ426F, in a class dominated by older Bultacos and Yamahas, Bemisderfer opened up a two-length lead over Brossman, with everyone else right on Bross- Timonium Short Track: Corey Hormes (825) and Dillon Cava (86A) went one-two in the 250cc class at the opening round of the 25th annual Timonium Indoor Short Track Series in Timonium, Maryland. man's tail. Paul Shoemaker slipped into fourth on the third lap, making for the only change in the top three. Shawn Rothstein took the 125cc lead from Nick Henderson, Joseph Schueler and Jason Isennock. Rothstein was pretty much in control up front, with Isennock getting into third on the fourth lap and taking second a few laps later. With Rothstein a secure winner, Isennock managed to throwaway second with a crash in the final turn. He tried to salvage something by pushing it across the finish, coming home fourth. A few years ago, they started running the 600s for Pro riders only. This year was the smallest field so far, as only four riders signed up. On the official start, Ace Phillips took the lead from a closely bunched pack consisting of Ed Hyde, Phil Libhart and Jake Johnson. On the third lap, Hyde fell in the second turn and collected Johnson. Libhart started pressuring Phillips for the lead, taking the lead entering the first turn with two laps left. Making his first start at Timonium, Brandon Robinson grabbed the 80cc lead from R.J. Hart, Austin Greenland, Tom Mudgett Jr. and Joey Parks. While Hart and Greenland ran very close, Robinson had a fairly easy time taking the win. Cory Crenshaw took the 50cc OilInjected-class win on a normally underpowered Suzuki JR, over a field of Yamaha PWs, while his brother Todd won the 65cc class. The same bike won the other two 50cc classes. Kyle Schlimme used Bailey Spence's Lem to win the 50cc (4-6) contest after a battle with Joe Bromley in the late laps. Spence then had an easy time taking the 50cc (7-8) victory. CN Timonium Short Track Timonium, Maryland Results: December 7, 2001 lRound 11 50 Oll-INJ: I. Cory Crenshaw (Suz): 2. Colin Webb (Yam): 3.
