Jones/Thorbacked CR 125. Barbacovi finished in third again, with Prahm going 5-5 for fourth over the 9-4 of Steven Colson. Matt McCrummen's first visit to LACR was a financially rewarding one, as he went 1- J for the 250cc Pro-class victory aboard his Oakley Sport/TCR/Motul-backed RM250. Warren Tittlemier and Jeff Eide each had a runner-up finish, with Tittlemier's coming in round two to earn the second-place payback. Mike Meadows (5-4) and Cliff Cook (6-5) rounded out the top five. Los Angeles County Raceway Trophy Series Opener to Eide By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,DEC.2 Honda·mounted Justin Eide attacked the J.B. Memorial Track at Los Angeles County Race· way with a vengeance en route to winning three out of four motos entered to claim the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate class wins, during the opening round of California Racing Club's annual Trophy Series. Cory Murphy was quickest out of the gate in the first 250cc Intermediate moto to lead Eide, Jeremy Ferro and Brandon Prahm. Halfway through the opening lap, Eide slid underneath Murphy for the lead and never looked back. Eide put a couple of seconds per lap on Murphy for an uncontested win. Bo Williams eamed a third· place finish after battling with Prahm and Ferro during the second half of the race. Prahm absconded with the holeshot in moto two, just ahead of Murphy and Eide. Murphy crashed his way to the back of the pack while Eide overtook Prahm for the lead on lap one. Eide put five seconds on Prahm, who went 4-2 for second overall. Bryon Ward overcame a bad start to finish third and claim fourth overall behind the 3-5 score of Williams. C.J. Mahon went wire to wire for the first ] 25cc Intermediate mota win. Eide made his way into second place after a midpack start and was reeling in Mahon but ran out of time and had to settle for a close second at the checkers. Anthony Barbacovi followed Eide up through the field to finish in third, ahead of Bryan Watson and Prahm. Eide got the upper hand over Mahon in 72 JANUARY 9, 2002' cue • WILLOW SPRINGS, CA. DEC. 2 Misty skies and cold winds could not deter the faithful, as a tight point races came down to the wire at the California Motorcycle Road Racing Association's season finale on the Willow Springs kart track. On a day of too many stories, the tale of Doug Hopkins' engine tear-down was a head~ liner. AI Lyons ordered the tear-down after Hopkins' very strong showing on the day, with an outright win in the Amateur Stock contest. an overall win in Amateur Formula 50, and a solid overall third in Veteran Stock competi~ tion. With arms in the air and a half-believing laugh, Hopkins questioned the tear-down. which only revealed a well-prepared and legal engine. In all fairness, Hopkins rode well but was not dominant. In Hopkins' best race, the Amateur Stock contest, Scott Garner was in close pursuit, pressing Hopkins hard at times; he took second overall. Young J.D. Schendel and Damian Saavedra were close behind for third and fourth. The premier classes. Amateur 80cc GP and Expert 80cc GP, lived up to expectations with a series of four exciting races. In Amateur 80 competition, Shawn Igercic was quick off the line in both races, only to slide back to third in each. Josh AJversons and Bert Silos worked up to battle for the lead in both races. with AJversons capturing the overall win. Silos had looked like the favorite in race two, but A1versons bested Silos on the last lap. Silos was impressive in second, while Mike Kelly wrapped up fourth. In the first Expert 80cc race. Shawn's brother Ian Igercic was lightning-fast off the line for the early lead - until Jason Perez worked his way through the field. Ian rode his best race of the season, holding off the attacks of Perez. On lap seven, Perez took the lead and held it to the checkers, with Ian in tow. Battling around Steve Shimabuku, Ben Morse and Skye Girard fought to third and fourth. In race two, Ian was again quickest, with Perez and Aaron Hammel, who was sidelined in race one, pressing hard. Riding at eleventenths, Ian held the lead to the closing laps. Perez snatched the lead from Ian with one to go, as Hammel came up and nipped Igercic for second at the stripe. Perez owned the overall, Ian earned second, and Morse and Girard pulled up into third and fourth. CMRRA will celebrate its 10th year in 2002, and Lyons is promising the best season ever, with an exciting 1 J -race series and increasing attendance. Results BEG STK; 1. Symphia Vue; 2.
