Malcolm Smith Charity Dual.Sport Ride/Winter Expo Raining on Malcolm Smith's Parade COREY MACOMBER By CLEl'lENT SALVAOORI Malcolm Smith Charity Dual-Sport RidelWinter Expo: Tiffany Richardson of O'Neal calendar fame and San Luis Obispo motorcyclist of note Bill "Poppy" Miller helped out at the charity event in San Luis Obispo, California. Mike in sight in all motos, but Mike was in control as he took a six-moto sweep in all three 85cc classes. However, when Mike climbed aboard his 125cc Honda, the competition was tough. In the first moto, Mike absconded with the holeshot, foliowed by Suzuki jockey Scott Simon and Chad Gaumer. Mike set the pace, and Simon was close behind. Lap after lap, Mike was able to hold off Simon, and when the white flag came out, Simon made a last-ditch charge but was not able to pass before the checkered flag. Mike took the win, followed by Simon and Gaumer. In the second moto, Simon took charge with the holeshot, followed by Gaumer, Justin Noble and Mike. Simon looked exceptionally fast, but Mike, who had a bad start, quickly made his way past Noble and Gaumer and set his sights on the leader. Simon was able to hold off Mike until the white flag came out. and Mike knew it was time to make the pass. Down the straightaway they roared, with Simon on the outside and Mike taking the inside line; Mike grabbed a handful of throttle and flew by Simon, who seemed stunned by the pass. The next flag would be the checkered' and there was no time to return the favor. Mike Alessi took the win, followed by Simon and Gaumer. Also heating up the track were the 65cc riders. In the 65cc Open class, Nick Paluzzi surprised the crowd as he shot out of the gate with the first-moto holeshot, followed by Johnny Jelderda and Jake Canada. Paluzzi led for four laps, and when the white flag came out, Paluzzi, whose adrenaline was pumping with the knowledge that he could puJl off the win, mistakenly pulled off the track when the white flag came out. Jelderda and Canada kept going. and Paluzzi returned to the track in third position. When the checkered flag came out, it was Jelderda, Canada and a disappointed Paluzzi. In the second moto, Jelderda grabbed the holeshot, foliowed by Canada and Paluzzi. Canada was close behind the leader, applying some serious pressure, but Jelderda was not backing down. The checkered flag came out, it was Jelderda, followed closely by Canada, and Paluzzi rounded out the top three. Canada would return to make his presence felt in the 65cc (9-11) division, taking both moto wins over Jelderda and Paluzzi. Shawn Gritten was untouchable in the 65cc (6-8) division, followed by Josh Greco and Caden Probst. Results Pee Wee Track 50 SHAFT (4.6): 1. /t\icheeI ft\oss (Yam): 2. Ryan Tull (Yam): 3. SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA, DEC. 1-2, 9 Up on California's central coast, San Luis Motorsports decided to try to slip in one more major event before the real rainy season arrived, and the multi-brand dealership held its Winter Expo 2001 the first weekend in Decem· ber. Lots of work and organization goes into such an event, with months of preparation. SLY!. owner Steve Myrick lined up a dozen motorsport celebrities to sign posters and lure the crowds, and the notables, coming from as far away as Australia and South Carolina, inciuded ISDT champion Malcolm Smith, Formula Extreme Jake Zempke, 250cc GP racer Chuck Sorenson, Supercross champ Nathan Ramsey, Arenacross victor Buddy Antunez, AMA off-road racers Randy Hawkins, Shane Watts and Rodney Smith, and the ever-popular O'Neal calendar girl, Tiffany Richardson. Several dozen exhibitors were also invited to set up shop, making sure there was a great deal to buy, with product from companies ranging from Axo to EVS Speed Protection to FMF Racing to Rifle Fairings to White Brothers, as well as Fox, Moose, Thor, No Fear and others. Helmets, boots, motocross gear everything a street or dirt rider could possibly need was available, with hefty discounts on all merchandise. Myrick had set up a modest maze running through his shop. All the bikes were outside, and as the fun- and deal..seekers entered the store, they were routed past all the booths, finally ending up at the cash registers - which were busy all weekend. If the sale of hot dogs is any indication of attendance numbers, more than 1400 tube steaks were grilled and eaten on Saturday, with proceeds going to charity. The local San Luis Obispo Child Abuse Prevention (SLO·CAP) council benefited greatly from all this, as they got the donations from the food and the Malcolm Smith Charity Dual-Sport Ride. More than 120 riders signed up for the ride, with a minimum contribution of $65 going to SLO-CAP. The ride, unfortunately, had to be delayed for a week, as Old Man Winter slid in on Saturday night, the rain pouring down tabbies and pooclIes on Sunday morning to the extent that the organizers felt that some of the riders would surely get stuck in some bottomless mudhole in the far reaches of San Luis Obispo county and never be seen again ~ and no sensible dealer wants to lose his customers that way. Even without MaJcolm's ride, the shop was busy with customers on Sunday, and there was a silent auction that had autographed jerseys, helmets, and even non~motorcycle products such as a television set and a pearl neck~ lace from local merchants up for bid. SLO-CAP made a good deal of money, which was the purpose of the exercise. So did San Luis Motorsports. And on the following Sunday, December 9, the dual-sport ride did go off (though without the presence of Malcolm Smith), followed by a spiendid barbecue. CN cue I • BIRTHIIATE ..•..••.
