grabbed the win after his runner-up showing in the 125cc division, topping Jason McCormick, aboard his Pro Grip-sponsored RM250. Daniel Blair took his Yamaha to one of his two podium appearances on the weekend via the third spot. On Saturday, the 250cc class once again roared off with Johnson at the front. This final event put an exclamation point on Johnson's Reno performance, as he put a solid gap between himself and the field on his way to his third main-event victory of the weekend. Tieamey put in another strong performance on the way to his finest finish of the event, securing the second step on the podium. Blair once again took third, to go along with his 250cc podium showing from the previous night. CN .... Uns1IIcIl ~ CenlIIr He_, NIIVII'" 1lnuIts: Novaebel' 1&-11, ZlDl llloumi 31 Friday 125 PRO: I. Melton was asleep somewhere back in the pack. Jones looked fast up front, but he ran off the side of a jump and dropped back to fourth, handing Knight the lead. Jones' off-track excursion put Bartram in second, but he immediately dropped his bike in the sandy inside of a turn while Young arced around the outside to take over second. Meanwhile, Melton had worked his way into the thick of things by passing Jones; he then hammered by an unsuspecting Manual for third. Up front, the battle for first between Knight and Young really started to heat up. Knight looked relaxed in first and had a few choice inside lines that forced Young to rail the long way around the outside. Unfortunately for Knight, that strategy only worked for about three laps. Young was the only 125cc rider to triple out of the whoops, and he used that to his advantage and jumped right alongside Knight with enough of an advantage to knock him off his prized inside line. Then, in the next turn, Young cemented the pass and started walking away with what looked like a sure win. Knight was deep into the rev limiter of his YZ250F, trying to keep up, and he looked like a shoo-in for second. However, all that was about to change. Young slammed a big kicker going into a slow, sandy turn that knocked him off the track and out of contention. This put Knight in first, with a suddenly motivated Melton right on his fender, zigzagging aII over the track, looking for a way around into first. Although Knight held on for another lap, Melton simply had more energy, and with one lap to go he forced Knight off the track to take THOMAS MILTON, FL, NOV. 17 aniel Young and John Melton may as well have been riding in business suits and ties at West Florida MX Park. The Fall Supercross Classic had arrived, and these two obviously meant business, as "300percent payback" and "first place" were numbers that made business sense to them and the cash made a difference as to how hard they rode. Consequently, it was obvious from the first lap of the 250cc Pro contest that Young, riding for Kiley's Motorsports on an RM250, was not to be denied first place. The 125cc Pro contest was a different story. Melton, another Kiley's rider, put in a comefrom-behind, put-your-nose-to-thegrindstone sort of ride that seems to typify his workmanlike style. Races were run in supercross format; heat races for each class paid money two places back, and the main was where the majority of the cash was to be made. In the 125cc Pro heat, Jason Manual snared the holeshot. However, Kevin "Recurring Nightmare" Knight set a winning pace nobody could match. Young easily won the first 250cc Pro heat after passing early holeshot specialist Ed Kiley and holding off a more serious threat from Ronnie Ramiscal. The second 250cc heat started as a battle between quick-starting Waiter Bartram, Knight and Brian Young. However, Melton sneaked by all three, opened a lead. of about 50 yards and held it to the finish. Chris Jones snagged the holeshot in the 125cc main, followed by Knight, Bartram and Brian Young. D 86 JANUARY 2.2002' cue • e n e _ s first for good, followed by Knight, Derek Fore, Jones and Bartram. In the 250cc main event, Kiley nailed yet another holeshot on his RM250. Knight was in second, followed very closely by Daniel Young, Chris Young and Hal Martin. Knight shouldered his way into the lead by the third turn. Daniel followed on the front straight on the first lap. Then Martin pushed by Kiley for third. Daniel quickly rode up Knight's bumper and tripled past coming out of the whoops and took temporary control of the race. He was pulling away by more than a second per lap but then he dropped the bike and let Knight, Martin and Kiley by. Daniel's bobble put Knight in first, with Martin in an excellent position to take the lead. Martin closed to Knight's rear fender, looking for a way around, but Knight held him off. Meanwhile, back in fourth, Daniel Young was back on track, and he finally passed Kiley. At the same time, Martin had lost some ground and found himself under attack from Daniel. Martin rode fast, but Daniel calmly walked by and motored up to challenge Knight for first for the second time in the main. Knight laid down some amazing laps of his own, using some unreal corner speed, but Daniel matched it all - plus another 10 percent. He eventually tripled past Knight in the same spot in the whoops as he had before. Once in front, Daniel Young opened the throttle even more and shot across the finish line way out front, followed by Knight, Martin, Kiley and Bartram. CN West FIDri. MX Parl< Milton, Fieri...
