Regional Arenacross Series Round 3: Reno Uvestock Events Center Johnson Scores Three By ROBERT BEAUPRE: RENO, NY, NOV. 16·17 renacross events have been happening for quite some time in Reno, Nevada's Livestock Events Center - and they've always been a big draw, undoubtedly in part due to Reno's considerable contingent of motocross racers and enthusiasts. The event this year also enjoyed some national significance as a round of the popular Regiona I Arenacross Series, a spin-off of the larger National Arenacross Series. As always, a mix of fast visitors and local talent com- A ..Josh prised a highly competitive Pro field. However, none in this sizable group would prove more successful than new Plano Honda team member Casey Johnson, who would claim the victories in three of the four finals. Johnson has long been a contender at the Reno venue, even in the days before national sanctioning. As a former member of the Pro Circuit, Yamaha of Troy, and Edge Sports.com squads, Johnson has gathered a wealth of experience against the nation's finest in his more than seven years on the national scene, and he put it to good use against the field in the Livestock Events Center. His biggest competition on the weekend came from a relative newcomer to the big time, Motoworld.com's Andrew Short. As a rookie last year, Short tested the national waters with backing from Pro Circuit and Team Green. His performances (including a 125cc Pro Sport title at Loretta Lynn's) were enough to lure him off his Kawasaki mount and secure a spot on the Suzuki-SUpported Motoworld effort. Short seems to have had little difficulty adjusting to his new RM, as he topped the only main event not claimed by Johnson. Short only contested the 125cc events this weekend, obviously in preparation for his effort in this year's 125cc Supercross series. In race action, the evening featured a diverse program. The array of classes ranged from the 50cc competitors all the way up tO'the Pro entrants, and just about everything in between. The highlight of the evening was, of course, the Pro contests, which featured some strong competition in the 125cc divisions between favorites Giant Short and Johnson. After Short claimed Friday's main (with Johnson placing second), Short once again shot out to a lead in the Saturday event and began setting a strong pace. However, it wasn't long before Johnson found his way to Short's rear wheel and brought the crowd to its feet. After a few laps of some incredible dicing, Short eventually gave way to Johnson's challenges. Johnson then set sail at the front and went on to claim the victory. Short held on strong for second, while Carson City's Nathan Tiearney placed his FMF/ Thor/Scott/Michael's-backed Suzuki in the final slot on the podium. Speaking of Tiearney, he established himself as the top local on the weekend, with podium finishes in three of the four finals. Though he was never able to overtake visitors Johnson and Short, it seemed that Tiearney was capable of podium finishes regardless of where he gated an impressive feat in the tight confines of Arenacross. In 250cc competition, Johnson clearly proved himself as the top of the class.
