Allen poured it on during the 5econd round of the Pirelli Tire5/Parts Unlimited/Moose/White Brothers-sponsored Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series. He took control early, maintained the lead for most of the race, and won by 30 seconds to claim his second win for this season. The Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/FMF/Moosebacked Allen had a great race. "My Pro Action of Kentucky suspension worked great," Allen enthused, "and my GPR stabilizer worked perfectly. I was one of the last ones going around the first curve and had a good line picked out. Going into the woods, I was third and not in a real hurry." He took an outside line around four AA riders and squeezed into a tight spot directly behind the leaders, Jeff Cregg and Mike McCrea. Off the AA start, McCrea grabbed the holeshot and barreled around the first comer, with Robbie King following a bike's length behind. They forged ahead for the next three or four miles, and then Allen passed them. McCrea stayed second, Mike Sampson moved into third, and King mo ed back one position. The freight train lasted the entire first lap until Allen pulled some time during his second lap. Allen ted for most of the race and claimed the fastest lap of 23:39 on his fifth and final lap. "I had a great battle with Jeff Cregg and Mike McCrea and just had a good ride," Allen said. "It was a lot of fun." The KTM-mounted Allen won first place overall and in the AA division, but the battle between Cregg and McCrea continued. Toward the end of the fourth lap, McCrea had a mishap with a tapper, while Cregg rolled on. "I started the first couple of laps kind of slow," McCrea said. "My arms P felt real tense, but on the third lap, I really picked it up. Jeff got around me on the fourth lap when we kind of got hooked up with the same lapper. He turned right into me and pushed me into a tree. I know it wasn't on purpose or anything, but I rode with a twisted front end until the end of the race. You get use to it being twisted, but it's kind of strange at first. I still put in a good lap, and outside of that, I really rode a trouble-free ride." The Team Green battle for second was thought to be finished when McCrea lost his position to Ben's Performance Center/Factory Effex/Hinson-supported Cregg. After he passed McCrea, Cregg manhandled his KX250 to catch up to Allen. Once he had him in sight, Cregg picked the line, and then wham! - his clutch cable snapped, letting the Bloomington Power Sports/Stein/IMS/Renthalbacked McCrea repass him and come in second place in AA and overall. "I had the line on him!" said Cregg. "Just as I was about to attempt a pass, my clutch cable snapped, and I hit some trees in a tight section and stalled. " After that, Cregg lost momentum and time. He struggled with starting his bike and lost his chance for second place when McCrea got around him. "P.A.'s dad [who was a spectator at the event] helped me get my bike started," Cregg said, "and I salvaged third place." The two other riders who dominated the overall positions were Jason Wofford and Steve Smith. Wofford claimed the fastest lap for the A class - 24:54, during his second lap. Smith was tied with Jack Bailey for the second-fastest lap - at 25:02 - during their fifth lap. Both riders tore up the trail, because they started several laps behind the AA riders. Wofford won the Four-Stroke A class and placed fourth overall, while Smith won the Vet A class and placed fifth overall. New Hope Hare Scrambles: P.A. Allen (left) thanks Mike McCrea (right) for the great battle at New Hope, Alabama, site of the second round of the AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles series. The New Hope track was created by Ron Pruitt and his NATRA Track Team. They ran the course backward from its summer race, and they were forced to reroute most of the trail, because it had been clear-cut since that time. Many riders seemed to enjoy the fast pace of the track and everyone liked the parking area because it resembled a golf course. The second round had 441 riders in all, and seven riders claimed their second win for the season, including Allen, Wofford, Senior A winner Scott Martin, Open B winner Ricky Whitley, Super Senior victor Don Rye, 250cc/Open C winner Kenny Judd, and Mini winner Cody Smith.
