D.J. Sharkey was the first B rider across the line. CASEY, IL, OCT. 13 "ReaJ men race motocross" and "Mud. sweat and gears" are phrases often heard in the sport of malo. Despite conditions that would have canceled a modern motocross. the Vin~ tage regional at Casey went off with a splash. With rain overnight and during the motos, mud was the main feature of this event. These riders rode, pushed and dragged their bikes across the finish line. They even look a vote at the end of the first set of motos whether or not to race the second moto - and they voted to continue! Track owner Jean Ramsay broke out his Maicos to take wins in the Over 50 Expert and Post-Vintage Over 50 Expert classes. His win in the Over 50 Expert came with a challenge. After winning the first moto, Ramsay had to deal with the charging Alex Krisher. Ramsay tried to keep him back, but Krisher slipped by to take the mota win. Ramsey look second in the mota and first overall. Rick Aguilar finished second overalJ with his 2·3 mota score. In the Sportsman 500cc Intermediate class. Missouri rider Greg Carney took his first regional win by trading mota scores with Husky rider Tim Hardin. Carney's secondmota win was the tie breaker, giving him the overall. John Lewis finished third overall. The GP 250cc Novice class proved that good things come to those who wait. In the first mota, KTM rider Rik Smits took a strong win. Jeff Chenoweth finished second, with Mitch Winder third. With rain falling at the drop of the gate. it looked like the second mota would be more of the same, but bike problems took out Smits and Chenoweth, handing the mota and overall win to Winder. Smits finished second overall and Chenoweth third overall. At the end of the day, rewards were given out and almost everyone ventured through the rain to the district banquet· and more competition. in the form of bench racing. The more beer consumed, the faster everyone was. In the eocc A race. Joe Hernandez. Bobby Fang and Stevie Bonsey were the first of the six competitors into the tree tum, and after some very exciting and fast racing, they fin· ished in the same order. Mike Snedden took the checkers first in the 100cc Stock class, in spite of the great tuck by Larry Andres in the last straightaway. Andres was right on Snedden's tail throughout the race. Bates/Progressive/Fog City/Elf/ Sticker Solutions-sponsored C.D. Howell was first in the 100cc Stock Youth race. The 100cc Modified-class win went to Bonsey. with Anselmi right behind him in the A class, and Craig Howell and William Rider in the Band C classes. Off-road legend Larry Roeseler made a special appearance to help support the cause; he was on hand to sign autographs and hand out four personalized jerseys. With the parade lap around the course and public relations taken care of, Roeseler was also there to race and have a good time. The course was 1. 7 miles long and the events were 45 minutes each. The first race of the day featured the Junior Vets and the Seniors, followed by the 60cc, eocc and women riders. Then came the 125cc{250cc classes. Vets took to the field next, followed by the 125cc/250cc/Four-Stroke Beginner contest. In the Pro event. Roeseler snagged the holes hot and started to puli away. with Guernsey and Thompson in chase. Roeseler jumped the triple early in the event; he only did it once and nearly cased it, but it was as impressive as all get out! Thompson and Guernsey's battie soon helped them catch up to Roeseler. Thompson made the pass on Roeseler. Guernsey soon followed suit and was now in the runner-up spot. The YZF riders soon put a small gap on Roeseler, aboard his KX250. Thompson bobbled and washed out in the corner on the back of the course. Roeseler and Guemsey both stopped to make sure that he was okay, and when they reappeared Roeseler had the lead. with Guernsey and Thompson giving chase. After a couple of laps of Roeseler ieading. it was Guemsey's turn to lead. Thomp- son repassed Roeseler, and Guernsey passed the checkered flag for the win. The funniest event of the day was when Roeseler and Guernsey hit the track for an impromptu one-lap XR50 race - while the 125cc and 250cc Beginners were racing on the track. Roeseler nabbed the holes hot. Guernsey grabbed a little too much throttle and whee lied off of the start. With true grit and determination, they sliced, cUced and banged bars for the lead, but it was Roeseler besting Guemsey. It was truly a Sight to see. The entire day was more like a fun ride than a race. The overall winners of each event got a small medallion for their efforts. but all proceeds went to the Red Cross. "It was a blast, an absolute blast," Roeseler enthused. "It was the most fun I have had in a long time. Lee did a great job... It was a great excuse to do some riding. I knew I had my hands full with Thomspon and Guemsey; both of them are great riders. n Results JR VET INT: I. Jeff Matthews. VET BEG: 1. Mark Purser: 2. Jeff Lesovsky; 3. Don Lesovsky: 4.
