Clough fought well and won. A little bit of luck also helped, as the official fire danger was lifted three days before the event. Clough and trail boss Don "Main Jet" Matheney worked hard and fast to set up the course on a tightened schedule. A unanimous thumbs-up from all of the riders confirmed, once again, that the Monkey Butt is one of Oregon's most popular races. The 9-mile course featured the traditional start/finish of the Clarks Branch MX facility. A perfectly groomed hillside motocross track gave spectators and pit crews some entertainment, while the gnarly outsections of the course gave the riders a true test of off-road savvy. Steep hills, high-speed ridgetops and plenty of dust kept everyone honest during the three-hour tour. Like many of the OMRA Cross Country races, where endurance and patience are often rewarded with good results, this race saw many lead changes among the Support classes late in the event. To appreciate the true spirit of this race and, more importantly, this sport, consider the words of Jason Sigfrid at the end of the Monkey Butt Hare Scrambles. "I had fun," Sigfrid declared, "and that's what it's all about." eN At the end of lap one, Walch led by a whopping two minutes, and he eventually crossed the finish line three minutes ahead of second-place finisher Matt Gosnell, and almost six minutes in front of third-place finisher Nick Pearson. Gosnell's day went pretty smoothly, though he had some trouble dicing with a sweeper on the second lap. The 250cc Expert dass was the Nick and David Pearson show. During the entire race, you could have thrown a blanket over the two, with David leading the way. However, three miles from the finish, David ran out of gas, allowing Nick to take the dass win. "It was a bit dusty out there today, but hey - that's a desert race for you: Nick said at the finish. "David ran out of gas about three miles back, but I had a lot of fun today. The course was well-marked, with a lot of fire roads and a great wash that was a lot of fun." The 250cc Novice dass featured a battle royal between Jeff Loya and Kody Rudder. Rudder got a good start and took the lead by the end of lap one, but he made a costly mistake, entering the pits by going down the wrong side of the ribbon. This allowed Loya to get back in front right before the first tight section in the trees. About 10 miles out on the second lap, Rudder caught Loya again, only to go over the bars in a pile of sagebrush. "I thought I had him [Loyal: Rudder said. "I caught back up on the second lap but crashed twice. The course was awesome and I had a lot of fun." Eventual 80cc Expert winner Kyle Cox didn't get a great start, but he was able to pull into the lead about four miles out. Cox battled briefly with Jerry Parsons but remained in the lead for the rest of the day. Parsons continued to charge and finished only 12 seconds behind for second. Kelli Heddon and Caroline Santoro were the only two women to compete in this year's race. Heddon rode hard to take a 15th-place finish in the 80cc Novice dass, while Santoro retumed from a broken leg to battle the course and take the Women's trophy. PIOCHE, NV, OCT. 6 Kellon Walch wes the overall winner at the second annual Knucklebuster Hare Scrambles in Pioche. Nevada. Walch grabbed the holeshot and was gone. Though most racers were troubled by the dust, Walch had dear vision for all 80 miles of the course. Despite the dust, the Bushwhackers put on a great race, with interesting characters and cardboard cutouts strung out around the whole course. "I thought the course was great," Walch said. "The only trouble I had was when I highsided in the wash on the back side of the course getting around a lapper. The guys in the leopard bikinis at the top of the hill were pretty funny, too. I tried to roost them, but I think I missed." NOVEMBER 21, 2001 • made it a close and exciting race for second for the entire moto. with Almond getting the nod at the end. Willie Ungerman nailed the race-two holeshot, ahead of Parker, with Sullivan in third. That just delayed the inevitable, however, as Sullivan was in front before the first lap was over. Almond, Humphries, Tim Parsons and Chad Geib joined the lead pack, while Sullivan took off again. Sullivan claimed moto two by a monster margin to take the overall 125cc Novice tille. Almond and Humphries duked it out all race long, with Almond winning the battle - and the war. Ungerman emerged from a duel with Geib and Parker to take fourth, and fourth overall. Parker led Geib and Parsons in the final tally. n Rodriguez (Suz); 4. Brett PreuSI (Kaw): 5. logan Binggeli (Yam). 125 BEG: I. Justin Weddle (Yom); 2. Cody LaT$en (Yom): J. Brian fowler (Han): 4.
