By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,OCT.7 Piloting his Twisted/Spy/FMF-backed YZI25, Ryan Happy just plain outran his competition for 45 minutes to win the 125cc Novice class during California Racing Club's Gremlin Grand Prix, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. When starter Don Gossett waved the green flag for the dead-engine start, Happy led the field through the right-hand first tum, followed by Darin Chisholm, Ricky Parks and Ricky Hemme. Happy quickJy put a few seconds on Chjsholm, as Lester Varnum came flying up through the pack to settle into third place, ahead of Hemme. Varnum and Hemme went at it over third place for a few laps until Varnum went down and dropped to the back of the pack. Meanwhile, up front, Happy continued to lead, but Chisholm upped the pace and had him in his sights. Chisholm closed to Happy's back fender at the 20-minute mark of the race and applied some pressure for a couple of circuits before Happy caught his second wind and slowly pulled away for the weIJ-deserved victory. Hemme and Parks argued over third place dUring the second half of the race until a bobble on the part of Parks allowed Hemme some breathing room. Blake Runestad ran almost the entire race in fifth place, where he would finish, ahead of C.R. Brunson and Casey White. The 250cc Novice race turned into a tworider battle that nearly lasted the entire 45 minutes. Jonathan Belding nailed the holeshot, ahead of Gabi Abayov, Grant Moore Jr. and Christopher Leiker. By the end of lap three, Moore was planted at Belding's back wheel, and he dogged him for the remainder of their track time. Belding kept the determined Moore at bay for the hard-fought win. Third went to Abayov, followed by Leiker and Sal Squeo. Sean Collier and his Twisted Threads/ Honda of Houston/RG3-sponsored CR250 not only walked away from the competition in the 250cc Intermediate class, he also beat all the 250cc Pros in the process. Collier came from his second-row start, behind the Pro class, to physically take over the lead just 15 minutes into the race. Justin Eide would go the distance for second place in the Intermediate class, ahead of Neil Chisholm and Bryon Ward. Results P/W YAA BEG; I. Ju.tin Shepll!d (Hon): 2. Jer~my Johnson (Yam); 3. Some 140 competitors decided to test their abilities in the hilly terrain of Jones. Michigan. Cool temperatures greeted Michigan's finest. The buzz in the pits focused on current points leader Corey Parlin, who recently broke his arm while competing at the National enduro held in Michigan. Could a late-season charge by Yamaha-mounted Wegner spoil Parlin's season, or would Parlin have enough points to hold his challenger off? When the flag dropped, Amsoil/Moose/ Enduro Engineering/Lansing Cycle/Scottbacked Corey Calkins grabbed the early lead, followed closely by Smith/Notoil/One Industries pilot Mike Stapula and the remaining Experts. Calkins enjoyed his quick start out front. As the first lap came to a close, Action Valley MX Park: Jason McCaskill (85) snared all four holeshots in the 125cc C and 16-24 motos, but each time B.J. Sauls (5) motored by on his new YZ for the moto win, taking both overall class victories in Paris, Tennessee. cue. e n e _ s NOVEMBER 2t, 2001 65
