Championship Series
Round 7: Luzerne Park
Lawson,
Hepler
Tops in
the Mud
By
JASON WEIGANDT
BROWNSVILLE, PA, OCT. 14
teady rains may have dampened
the Luzerne MX Park in
Brownsville, Pennsylvania, but they
couldn't cool off the hot racing action
once the motos began. This was
especially true for AMA District 5 regular Shane Lawson, who took convincing wins in the Over 25 and
125cc A classes and finished a close
second to Tony Waugaman in the
250cc A class.
"I don't know if I really like the
mud,· said the City Cycle-backed
Lawson, "but people tell me I ride
pretty good in it.·
Light rains early in the day kept
the track in good shape, but the
weather forecast called for major
downpours later in the afternoon. The
Racer Productions team decided to
restrict the day's program to a onemoto format, which would hopefully
get the motos finished before the torrential rains swept in. The strategy
worked, as every class got to race
one good, long moto, and only in the
waning moments of the day did the
track start to get slippery. Also, many
of the racers were happy to get a
break.
