In the Over 30 contest, Baer put his Battlefield H-D/Baer Racing Products-sponsored Rotax into the lead immediately and checked out on the field. Damian Kocovinos, Lance Stauffer and John Winsett Sr. followed. With Stauffer drifting back, Ed Hyde moved into a close battle with the others for second. After six laps, Hyde emerged as top dog of that pack, while Winsett tried in vain to get the outside line to work in daylight but trailed Kocovinos for third at the line. The 500cc Two-Valve contest was a little closer, as Dave Smith followed Baer out of two. Heading into one on the second lap, Smith tried to stuff it inside Baer, but Baer slammed the door. Smith stayed close to the end but couldn't get close enough to try another pass. Jim Chapman and Nick Taylor staged their own battle for third a few lengths back. Raun Wood looked like he might also take a pair of wins, in the 600cc A and Sportsman fmals. He took the lead off two from late entry Mike Varnes (who thought it was an evening event and arrived just as the heats started), Brian Phillips Jr. and Jared Mees. Phillips bobbled slightly off four on the second lap, and Mees took third by the start of the third lap. With Varnes in the low line and Wood in the middle of the groove, the pair traded first place several times until Wood took control with two laps to go. After blowing up his regular ride in practice, Mees borrowed Bruce Miller's 500cc Rotax for the afternoon. While competitive in the heats, he had trouble running with Varnes and Wood in the heats. In the Sportsman contest, Mees took the lead at the end of the first lap from Wood and Varnes. Using the slightly better tractability of the 500 on a track on which the racing groove wasn't as wide as it normally is at night, Mees stuck it right on the inside groove and used it to hold off Wood. On the ninth lap, Wood slipped under off two, but he couldn't hold it through three and four, letting Mees back in front, where he stayed to the end. Chris Klinefelter grabbed the 250cc A lead and checked out, winning by almost half a straight. Shawn Baer led Kocovinos, Phillips and Bryan Douglas in the battle for second. Douglas took third from Kocovinos as they entered the first turn on lap four, while Rich Mellinger started picking off riders after a typical poor start, using the outside line to take control of second on the sixth lap. Douglas displaced Baer for third with two laps to go. Brandon Robinson and Austin Greenland staged another hard-fought battle for the 85cc (7-11) win. Robinson took the lead, with Greenland right on his tail. After a little bar banging, Robinson still held on to the lead, with Evan Baer, John Long and Joey Parks fighting for third. After trying for several laps, Greenland got under Robinson as they came off the fourth turn to take the two-Iaps-to-go sign. Other winners included track owner John Winsett Sr., who was victorious in the Over 40 class; John Long, who grabbed a holeshot to claim the 65cc-c1ass win; and John Lewis, who easily topped the 250cc B/125cc B contest. Joe Dohm again won the 600cc B class, while Bailey Spence won the 50cc Oil-Injected and 50cc (4-6) classes. 1:1I hth V"ley Speedwey s,riat . ., p_,t••i8 .....Ib: lIc:l8lIer13, ZlG1 IFiul .......) 50 OIL·INJ: 1.
