AMP/GFI Super Gold Cup Octoberfest Series Round 2: Carnegie Cycle Park Enochs Plays 'em at Carnegie By Luzerne Park: Shane Lawson won both the 125cc Aand Over 25 classes at the seventh round of the AMA District 5 Pennsylvania State Championship series in Brownsville. "I just spun out a little there," Lawson said of his mistake. Lawson hung on for second, with Suzuki rider Marc Bosnic rounding out the top three. Lawson got revenge in the 125cc A class. With rain falling, he started third, and then took the lead after a brief battle with F&S Suzuki's William Ursic. While Ursie worked to just stay upright in the slippery conditions, Lawson methodically pulled away. "I try to practice all the time, even when it rains," said Lawson. "Today, I tried to use outside lines so I would be smooth through the corners and not go down." Lawson held on to win over Ursie and Yamaha-mounted Steven Onisko. Hepler dominated both of his motos on his way to wins in the 125cc B and Schoolboy classes. "I just tried to get a good start, ride hard, and catch as many of those Aclass guys as I could," said Hepler, adding jokingly, "I also tried to overjump a few jumps. I figured a few hard landings would shake some mud off of the bike to make it easier for my dad to clean it." eN "It's not bad only racing one moto, n said Lawson, a native of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. "It would have been nice to rebuild myself and win the 250cc class, too, but I'll get home and see my kids this afternoon, and that's nice. n Lawson's two wins were matched by the dominant ride of Team Suzuki Amateur Support rider Broc Hepler of Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Hepler showed' his versatility by stomping the Schoolboy and 125cc B field in the mud - just like he does when it's dry. He even gave the crowd something to cheer about when, on the last lap of the 125cc B moto, he grabbed a little too much throttle coming out of a turn and started spinning his rear wheel. Instead of backing off, Hepler just stayed on the power and did a full 360-degree spin before heading back out. The NASCAR-style doughnut showed Hepler knows how to have fun even when the conditions are tough. "It wasn't too bad out there," said the friendly Hepler. "My boots got a little heavy, but otherwise it was okay." After winning at Brownsville, Hepler took a cross-country trip to Southern California's Glen Helen Raceway Park for the Suzuki RM Cup event. Hepler, class champion of the 85cc Modified (14-15) class at Loretta Lynn's, rode to a solid 125cc Intermediate-class win in California. The District 5 rider is sure to be a force on the National Amateur circuit again in 2002. Lawson, known for his good starts, grabbed the early lead in the 250cc A class and slowly but surely pulled away from the field. Tony Waugaman, a Honda rider who had already taken the victory in the Vet A class, gave chase and kept the pressure on. It appeared Lawson had the win in hand until he lost it just a few turns from the finish, allowing Waugaman to slip by. 62 NOVEMBER 21, 2001 • cue JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS LNERMORE, CA, OCT. 14 amaha pilot Dustin Enochs cleaned house in the 80cc Intermediate and Supermini classes at round two of the AMP/GFI Super Gold Cup Octoberfest Series, presented by Merced Powers ports and Swift Auto World. The Fresno resident made the trek north to the seldom-used Carnegie track and found conditions to his liking, as the Azevedo crew had done their dirty work, transforming a normally dusty, rock-hard SVRA track into a respectable motocross layout. In fact, it marked the first AMP/GFI event held at the facility this year, and more than 300 curious riders turned out for the event. In Supermini action, Suzukimounted Luke Layton grabbed the early lead in moto one, with Justin Enos, Buck Ford and Enochs in tow. However, Enochs had no intentions of Y following anyone, and he quickly made his way up front by the end of the first lap. Enos made his way by Layton and settled into second all by himself, while a good battle for third developed between Layton, Kurtis Batey and Beau Wiegand. Both Batey and Wiegand were on the move, quickly displacing Ford and Layton. The two battled until Wiegand made his move on the white-flag lap, getting by Batey on back section of the track. Up front, Enochs continued to increase his lead over Enos, eventually taking the checkers with room to spare. Wiegand followed Enos in for third. Batey and Matt Lozada rounded out the top five. In moto two, Lozada snagged the holeshot, ahead of Wiegand, Ford, Enos and Batey. Although missing from the lead pack, Enochs was meticulously making his way through the pack. Up front, things got interesting when Wiegand went down just , - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - , Ul o z UJ '" i:i =; ~ Luzerne Park Brownsville, Pennsylvania Results: October 14, ZOOl (Round 1 of 81 50 CL·}: 1.
