Mike Lightfoot Memorial AHRMA Speed & Sport National Vintage Motocross Series Round 18: Hollister Hills SVRA Bv CLeft) Chad Mcintosh - seen here on his Rickman Matchless mount - was the man at the final round of the AHRMA Speed & Sport National Vintage Motocross Series, winning all six motos entered for the overall victories In the Sportsman Open Twin Expert, Classic 500cc Expert and Premier 500cc Expert classes. MIKE VANCil PHOTOS B·t JOHN GOlA HOLLISTER, CA, OCT. 21 had Mcintosh of Stanton, California, was the dominant rider at the Mike Lightfoot Memorial motocross event, sponsored by the Santa Clara Riders Unlimited. This was also the 18th and final round of the AHRMA Speed £, Sport National Vintage Motocross Series. Mcintosh entered three classes and put his 1960 Matchless 600cc machine and his 1967 Triumph 650cc ride to a real test, starting and finishing six motos on a very demanding gran prix motocross course that had been modified for vintage machines - and he won all six! One admiring competitor remarked that Mcintosh has been to most of the AHRMA motocross series events this year, and pretty much dominated everyone he entered. This day's six wins came in the Sportsman Open Twin Expert class, the Classic 500cc Expert class, and the Premier 500cc Expert class. In the Sportsman Open Twin Expert class, McIntosh got the holeshot in moto one and ran away. In moto two, he had to overtake Clark Sumner to take the point. In both motos, he was aware that one slight error would allow Sumner, on his 1965 Triumph, to challenge. In both motos, Sumner finished right behind Mcintosh. Danny Davies, on his 1962 Triumph, outperformed Don Dotson and his 1970 Triumph to take third. Mcintosh's toughest test came in the well-attended Classic 500cc class. He had to deal not only with Sumner but with seven others who wanted the win. The chief competitor in this class was Charlie Beck, riding a 1966 Maico. Throughout both motos, Beck was never more than four lengths behind Mcintosh. In both Premier 500cc Expert motos, Kelly Shane, on his ancient 1955 Ariel 500, burst away from the starting gate with everyone behind him. Midway through lap one, Mcintosh overtook Shane and kept his Matchless in front for the remaining laps in both motos. Shane held off John Huegel, on his 1956 Indian Warrior, but nearly got beaten by the Indian in the second moto. Dave Janiec and his equally old AJS 500 rounded out the field, finishing fourth in both motos. Premier Open Twin Expert action featured a two-moto runaway for Butch Cochran, on his Tri-BSA (a 1962 marriage between a Triumph powerplant and a BSA chassis). In practice and during one moto, the Tri- C CFar right) Butch Cochran launches his Tri-BSA down the "Elevator Shaft" - a one-story drop-off - en route to the Premier Open Twin Expert win in Hollister, Califomia. lRight) Pat Brown C83Y) leads the Over 40 Experts into Hollister Hills SVRA's tum one en route to the overall class victory. BSA began to have a mind of its own, as the throttle would stick wide open and the kill switch wouldn't do its job. Cochran said he definitely had his hands full trying to avoid going full throttle and still keep ahead of Joel Sweeny, on his 1957 BSA, and eventual third-place finisher Danny Davies, on a 1962 Triumph. Davies encountered his own problems in moto two, which cost him second overall. Most entries were from western states, as expected, but there were also entries from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The loudest applause during trophy presentations went to Jonathan Bren of New York, New York. The personable Bren competed in both the Sportsman 125cc and Sportsman 250cc classes using his 1975 Honda and his 1974 Montesa Cappra, respectively. He placed second in both 125cc motos for second overaJl, while in the 250cc class he finished sixth and eighth in a 21-rider field, placing eighth overall. After riding a 1973 Triumph 500 to victory in the Classic 500cc Novice class, Greg Wright was awarded his first-place plaque - and in addition, he was presented with the Mike lightfoot Perpetual Sportsman Award, a beautiful wood-and-metal trophy sculpted by Jimmy Nations. Wright promised to return in 2002 and bring the trophy for next year's recipient. Lastly, the Premier 500cc Intermediate class was an attentiongetter. In moto one, Gary Cochell, on his 1962 Rickman, ran away with the win but was chased the whole dis- tance by Dorian Sleeper, on an equally well-prepared Cheney 500. In the second moto, Cochell was a non-starter, and Sleeper roared to the front, only to be challenged by Terry Pratt, on a 1956 BSA. Pratt gave it his best shot and looked real good in the process of placing second. BSA pilot Rod Brasil was third, and 1960 Eso rider Fred Mork, who is on the AHRMA board of directors, was fourth. eN Hollister Hills SVRA Hollister.
