Washington State Motocross Championship Series Round 7: Washougal Motocross Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT (Right) Despite the mUddy conditions at the seventh round of the Washington State Motocross Championship Series, Kawasaki jockey Mike Corder clobbered the competition in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. WASHOUGAL, WA, OCT. 7 espite the season's muddiest conditions, Kawasaki riders Kory Huffman and Mike Corder sloshed to impressive overall victories at round seven of the Washington State Motocross Championship Series at Washougal Motocross Park. Huffman posted his first win of the series with a 125cc Junior-class victory, while Corder connected on 125cc and 250cc Pro-class victories. Each class got to vote whether to run single- or double-moto formats, and the vote was unanimously in favor of a single moto. Such a plan suited Corder just fine; the rider from Rainier, Oregon, walloped the competition in the] 25cc Pro class, although in the 250cc class, the Team Green-backed rider trailed AMA National veteran Don Bisceglia for nearly half of the moto before making a pass stick. Huffman - the son of track managers Rick and Pam Huffman, the grandson of track owners Ralph and Carolyn Huffman, and the nephew of AMA National star Ryan Huffman has spent less than a year aboard a 125cc machine, but on this day everything clicked for the 13-year-old from Washougal, Washington. Yamaha rider Eric Stevenson pulled the holeshot at the unleashing, but he couldn't hold the lead for more than a few turns. Huffman took command from that point on and increased his lead with every circuit, placing as much as ] 5 seconds on the squabble for second place in the later stages of the extended eight-lap moto. Huffman had a close encounter with a lapped rider on the final lap; the backmarker fell in Huffman's path, but Huffman stayed upright in the mayhem to post his biggest win of the season. Another KX pilot, Guy Tow, ran a solid second for the majority of the moto, despite pressure from Eric Green, Travis Kruger, Stevenson and Jesse Crandall. Tow got the nod for the position, followed by Green. Corder's first overall win of the day came in the DNF-marred 125cc Pro/B contest. Corder darted out front at the start, but up-and-comer Kelvin Schoen had other ideas, slithering past Corder midway through the opening lap. However, the Yamaha rider then crashed in the whoop section and found himself well behind Corder at the finish. Eastern Washington rider Dustin Lyon trailed Corder and Schoen at the finish to net third. In the adjoined B class, Oregon's Tye Crandall rode impressively 42 NOVEMBER 21,2001 • cue (Left) Don Bisceglia led much of the muddy single moto of the 250cc Pro class at Washougal Motocross Part< until Corder passed him. Bisceglia bolted to the head of the field at the unleashing of the 250cc Pro/B moto, and the Suzuki rider remained in the point position for much of the race. Bisceglia forced Corder to back off the pace with a constant shower of mud, but on lap five Corder took advantage of a mistake on Bisceglia's part to take a lead he'd never relinquish. Corder even built up a small lead in the final stages to cap off a double-class decimation. Honda rider Jeff McFarland rode an impressive race, finishing amid the Professional riders in his 250cc Bclass win ahead of Crandall, Joe Brockway, Jesse Allen and 40-something Darryl Zumstein, who finished fifth after running up front earlier. Bisceglia came back later to trounce the competition in the Over 30 A/B class. The rider from Oregon was not challenged in his wire-to-wire win, ahead of former AMA National riders Zumstein and Andy James. While Bisceglia held a large advantage at moto's end, the battle for second went to the finish line. Zumstein I e n e _ s appeared to have a lock on the position for much of the race until James overcame a poor start and clawed his way into contention. On his Yamaha YZ426F, James was the fastest rider through the whoop section, but he lost out by less than a wheel to Zumstein at the checkered flag. Josh Hill was a two-class winner, posting the BOcc (7-]]) and Supermini-class victories on his new Yamaha mount. Hill scored convincing wins in both motos, even recovering from a near crash in the mud-filled whoop section to beat Kawasaki jockey Shawn Haberlock by 10 seconds in both classes. Lance Phillips placed third in both classes to Hill and Haberlock. KTM-mounted Landon Currier clobbered the competition in the 27rider 60cc age-group contest, beating Oregon's Jared Wood by some] 0 seconds in his runaway performance in the single-moto format. eN Wllhoupl Motocross Parll W.shoupl, Washington Results: lJctDber 7, 2001 (Round 7 of 8J WMN: 1.
