Sacramento Raceway Earls Eliminates 'em By AARON AND ADAJII HANSEL SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 28 With the season drawing to a close and the race for points getting tighter, every rider was giving it 110 percent on this night, especially the Beginning Old·Timers. Doug Rice grabbed the first-mota holeshot, followed by Dan Earls, Steve Bennett and Johnny Frank. Earls quickly commandeered the lead from Rice, though, and immediately began building a lead. In third, Bennett was a good distance ahead of Frank and Jim Cruz, but for some reason he opted to roll a double, nearly allowing Frank and Cruz to pass him. Fortunately for Bennett, Frank and Cruz both cased the landing on either side of him and he stayed a few lengths ahead. Even more exciting than the action on the track were the antics of track photographer Adam Hansel. as he failed a wild-looking attempt to lIvoid eating dirt after backing into a hay bale. Back on the track, Earls was farther ahead and looking comfortable there, while fifthplaced Cruz was making·a bid for fourth against Frank. Earls caught up to the Novices, who had started well before him in a split-gate format, and the crowd was not h~ppy. Rice was alone in second. As the end of the rZice neared, the only action was between Frank and Cruz, as Cruz hounded Frank mercilessly for fourth. Cruz had showed Frank a wheel a couple of times but was never able to make anything stick until the final comer. Cruz put a clean block-pass on Frank to take over fourth and held on. The crowd cheered as Cruz and Frank flashed across the finjsh line - and as Adam Hansel tripped over the same hay bale for the second time in one night. Earls kicked off the second mota by edging out Rice and Bennett in order to secure the holeshot. Going into the back section, thumper riders Earls and Rice quickly accelerated away from the pack. Earls and Rice were pushing each other, resulting in a fast pace. Behind them, Bennett, Frank and Cruz almost all collided with one another on the doubledouble. Somehow they all saved it and held their positions, Heading into the second lap, Earls now had about a one-second lead. Cruz was doing his best to run down Rice, but he nearly endoed over the treacherous doubledouble. Bennett came up to challenge for third. With one lap to go, Earls still had the lead, but he almost threw it away, getting way out Sideways going down the start straight. The battle for third was heating up, as Bennett was applying strong pressure on Cruz. As it stood, Earls would win if he managed to keep it on two wheels. Rice just about had second place wrapped up. The fight for third was still raging on each comer, and Frank was within striking distance if any of the top riders slipped up. Coming around the final corner into the whoops, Bennett was within a bike length, but Cruz found some last-second trac· tion and held on for third. Results 50 YAAJS{Jl BEG: 1. Chris Decoque (Yom): 2. A warm fall day and a jump-laced track greeted upwards of 400 racers to this circuit on top of a hill. The Novice classes were owned by Chad Zaiser from Columbus. who took his Hondas to sweeps of the 125cc C and 250cc C classes. Dustin Wyne ran well for second in the 250s and third in the 125s. Another Chad was at it in the Over 25 B class. Chad "ice" Waiker punched his KTM 520 up front for the victory over runner-up Mark Kiser, while Tony Brown stormed home third aboard his Yamaha. Walker turned in a strong second-place performance in the Over 30 B class as well, taking second behind Laurelville's Dave "Hom Dog" Hom. While the Chads did their damage. the Brads had a plethora of wins as well. Young Bradley Baker cranked his blue Polini in for the 50cc (7-8) class win. besting David Truske in second, with another Brad - this time Bradley Minnard - in third. Bradley Strunk punished his new Yamahas around this tricky track. taking the 125cc A class after battling early leaders Jason Frecker. Steve Andrich and Chris Whitcraft. Strunk. riding hard on his new machines, was aided by the misfortune of Ff,S Suzuki's Whitcraft, whose RM 125 suffered engine failure. Strunk would meet Andrich again in the Over 25 A class, in which Andrich made many mistakes and yet saved second on the day. Strunk went on to win once again and put some more money in his pocket. The 250cc A class, though, was the domain of Whitcraft, as he spanked the field after some incredible riding by Jason Frecker. The "Prince of Pomeroy" surprised many with his holeshots and determined, expeditious riding. Frecker was rewarded with second overall on his CR250 after lighting up the track and leaving many wondering, "Who is this kid?" Magnoiia's Matt Barnes taught the teenagers a lesson, pushing his Kawasaki home first in the Schoolboy class. Nick Carroll took second. The Leadbeater brothers had a terrific day of racing. Younger brother Joey won the 80cc Extra class, while older sibling Chris Jr. took the helm in the Open class aboard his Yamaha YZ426F. The B classes featured great rides by buddies Willy Browning and Andy Willard. Browning took the 125cc B victory, with Barnes in second. Willard came back to win the 250cc B contest after Browning won the fjrst moto. Browning, seemingly one of the fastest riders on the track - in all classes - won big in the 16·24 class as well, with Willard taking runner-up honors. Zing, Loop Show No Fear By JOHN BETHEA SAN JACINTO, CA, SEPT. 28 For the second week in a row, the two fastest regulars here at Competition Park faced off for three motos, and experience agajn prevailed as the newest No Fear clothing MX Series got under way. The previous week, it was for trophjes only; on this night, it got serious. After riding the Before The Hill (17-24) class last week, Jeff Loop, on the EVS/No Fear/FMF/IMS Honda, switched over to the Schoolboy 125cc class and again went nose to nose with Bob Zing, who was riding the Zingg Graphics/Alpinestars Suzuki in the adjoined 250cc Intermediate class. Loop's switch in class didn't change things, though, as Loop, who won the final mota in their last duel, jumped immediately into the lead in the first mota. That ended on the second lap, when the older and bigger-bike-riding Zing took the lead and never trailed for the rest of the night. However, Loop stuck with the more experienced rider for all he was worth in the '18 laps of racing. Another rider moving to a new class - Abie Lara Jr., on the Bert's Mega Mall Kawasaki found his first outing in the Vet Juniors just as hard as the 250cc Beginners had been. as he played tag with Paul McPhail's 1978 Progressive Suspension Honda for the first two races, each time coming up on the short end of the count. He finally prevailed in the third round, but it was too late to salvage an overall, as McPhail coasted home in second. Jim Edmonds plopped his Honda/Yamaha of Redlands CR into first place early in each 125cc Beginner encounter and swept the class, with Yamaha-mounted Darren Hawks claiming the solid runner-up position with a 2-4-2 overall performance. Kawasaki jockey Phil Marquez won the 250cc version of the same class, also in a sweep, In fact, sweeps were the norm for the evening's competition in the rest of the events - except one: the 65cc Beginner contest, in which JBC Kawasaki rider Jarrett Loop recorded victories in the first two motos, shutting out any hopes for Dallas Leedom on the Motion X Sports Kawasaki in the third. Those riders with sweeping wins in the series' opener included Nitro Johnson, on the lemon Grove Motors KTM, in the 50cc (7-8) class; Tommy Madden, on a Chaparral/Cycle Parts West Kawasaki, in the 65cc (9-11) class; Kawasaki jockey Jeff Worthing in the 100cc (12-13) class; Dustin Roberts, on a Dad-sponsored Yamaha, in the 80cc (12-13) class; Christopher Valadez, on a Montclair Yamaha entry, in the 80cc Beginner class; and Yamaha-mounted Jeff Bua in the Vet Beginners.
