CCS Southwest Sprint Series Round 9: Firebird International Raceway A Costley Victory Bv MICHAEL Ross CHANDLER, AZ, OCT. 6-7 T odd Costley came away from the latest round of racing in the CCS Southwest Sprint Series with a nice wad of cash in his back pocket after winning the prestigious Unlimited GP class at Firebird Raceway on Sunday. The 34-year-old Gallup, New Mexico, man used his Michelin Pilot-shod YZF600R6 to trounce the field at the Firebird East track in a remarkable display of road racing talent in his first full season of racing. "I just tried to get out front early and be consistent," said Costley from his pit after the race. "I knew Robb [Martin] would be right there, so I kept my head down." Costley's win in Unlimited GP came at the expense of hard-riding Robb Martin, who fought his way up to second from an eighth-place start. Martin was fast all weekend and could be found up front on his R6 no matter what class he was racing. In all, he carded wins in Heavyweight Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight GP and GTU. However, it was not an easy weekend for the resident of Prescott, Arizona, having crashed in the first tum of the Unlimited Supersport race, taking James Romero with him and running off the track at a pivotal moment during the Middleweight Superbike race. "It wasn't my best weekend, but the high point was getting everything sorted out before my trip to Daytona," reported Martin from his pit. "I almost hit Costley in turn three and ran off the track. After that, I just wasn't able to get it back together. I still feel bad about locking the front brake in Unlimited Supersport and taking out Romero." Third place in the Unlimited GP race went to Scott Jensen, who was riding a new GSX-R7S0 for Huge Industries. com, which had a large presence in the Firebird pit, with their silver/gray-and-orange-Iiveried transporter and bikes, complete with pit girls. Jensen slotted into second after Chad Rolland ran off the track, but Martin came past under the brakes in turn 10 on lap seven to take over the runner-up position. Jensen tried to get second back on the last la p but ended up taking third at the flag. GSX-R7S0-mounted Eric Haugo took a close fourth, just 1.82 seconds behind Jensen, in Unlimited GP, capping off a very successful weekend. Haugo scored his first Expert win with a victory in the Heavyweight Supersport class earlier in the day. Eric Anderson used his GSX-R7S0 to put in another good weekend with a fifth in Unlimited GP as he extended his overall points lead in the club, moving ever closer to his second consecutive number-one plate with only a single weekend of racing left in the season. Sixth went to number-two plate holder John Jewett, on his GSXR600. Jewett came under pressure from Rolland's R6 on the last lap. Although Rolland got a good start, he ran off the track in turn 10 on the third lap. Rolland managed to take a close seventh at the flag, .45 seconds behind Jewett. Mark Hensley was pleased with his eighth-place finish after sorting out the carburetion problems that plagued his GSX-R750 last time out. The affable Phoenix man was surprised at his competitiveness after taking fifth in the Heavyweight Superbike since he has only raced three times this season. Mark Chisholm, Jensen's Huge teammate, took ninth place ahead of Rick Stratton's RC51. Matt Hartlieb was the Amateur of the weekend after scoring wins in every class he entered. Hartlieb used his F4 Honda to separate himself from the rest of the Amateurs and was usually up front, racing with the Experts. Hartlieb even managed to pull off an overall victory in Saturday's wet GTU race, finishing 7.02 seconds ahead of Robb Martin. eN Flreblrd Raceway: Todd Costley, en route to winning the Middleweight Superblke contest at the ninth round of the CCS Southwest Sprint Series in Chandler, Arizona.
