bikes for the start of the 250cc/Open contest. Eric Streich's big Honda XR650 came roaring to life first, and he was never challenged, as he simply rode away from the rest of the pack for the win. George Chamarro, on his Yamaha WR250F, worked his way up to second, with Shane Wright's 520cc KTM in tow for third. The largest class of the day was the combined Enduro and Vintage class, as 45 riders filled the start area. All eyes were focused on the first turn, as the corner seemed too small for everyone to make it through. As they say, "rubbing's racing" - it wasn't pretty, but the pack made it through. In the Enduro class, Streich again found his way home first. "I have been practicing starts for weeks, and it paid off today," said Streich, "and it's much more fun to run up front today." In the Vintage class, Richard Rossberg took the overall in the pre-1974 class on his Yamaha 250, and Dick Tabacco smoked the pre-19B3 class with his Can-Am 175 with a massaged 370cc engine. The worn and bump-filled course welcomed the Expert class for the last race of the day. The flag dropped and, almost in unison, the three Hondas of Shawn Mitchell, Scott Gibson and Jon Dullum fired. In the run to the first turn, Mitchell lost the lead to Gibson as he forced his way past. Gibson's lead was short-lived, though, as he stuffed his front wheel into a talc-filled corner, losing his momentum and allowing Mitchell and Dull urn by. Mitchell set the fastest lap of the day - just under nine minutes with Dullum a few seconds off. That margin vanished as Mitchell bobbled at the scoring gate, allowing Dullum to challenge for the lead. For the next couple of laps, Dullum and Mitchell battled on every inch of the course, swapping the lead position back and forth. On the fourth lap, Gibson's engine seized - and naturally, it had to be at the point furthest away from the pits. "First, the rear tire went flat; then the engine locked up out by Yuccavi1le," said Gibson. "I'U be ready for the next race." On lap five, the running order was Mitchell by four bike lengths over Dullum, with a hard-charging Jason Garberg coming out of the dust five bike lengths back in third. Garberg's booming Yamaha YZ426F was pinging off the rev limiter in the short straights around the course. For the next few laps, each of the three leaders were waiting for the others to make a mistake. No mistakes were made, however, and Mitchell pulled out to a safe lead over Dullum for the win. "That was fun!" Mitchell laughed. "Being out front, dicing for the lead well, it was just fun'" "I know it would have been even more fun for me if Shawn [Mitchell] would have ate my dust the whole race," noted Dullum, "but he rode really well today, and my hat's off to him." eN Rainbow MDtarsparts Complex 6r1l8. This is obviously plenty of incentive, because a lot of the locals came out to take a shot at a chance to see McGrath and Carmichael in what will undoubtedly be the best rematch to date of this century. Two notably fast riders who came out were Casey Hinson and Robby Baptista. Though he is only 12 years old, Hinson has been riding the 125cc Intermediate class and doing quite well in local events. Baptista is a little bit older and rides as an Intermediate in both the 125cc and 250cc classes. Baptista usually brings his 125 and his 250 to each race, but for some reason, he only entered the 250cc Intermediate class at the fairgrounds. He lined up with Coarsegold's Matt Gaines in both motos and rode to impressive 1-1 finishes. Gaines was good on the starts, but Baptista's skill showed in the whoops and slippery, hard-packed comers. Lap after lap in both motos, Baptista pulled away from Gaines and won in convincing fashion. Back in the 125cc Intermediate ranks, poor Hinson was feeling pretty lonely. Since he was the only entrant in his class, he was grouped with the 125cc Novices and the lone 125cc Pro in attendance, Billy Jurevich. Naturally, Jurevich was fast, but Hinson took advantage of the opportunity to learn. He seemed to be surveying Jurevich's lines and rode at a pace surprisingly close to that of the Pro. All in all, both motos were uneventful for Hinson. The drama went up a notch in the Sportsman X race, when Baptista and Hinson lined up opposite each other on the starting gate. The Sportsman X race is unique in a couple of ways. For one, any rider from any full-size class can enter. Furthermore, it's a single-moto format, which means that anything can happen. That's exactly how it went. In a situation where you might expect a juniorhigh-aged kid to be intimidated by a high schooler on a bigger bike, Hinson did exactly the opposite. Both riders got out of the gate clean, and it was immediately apparent that their speed was closely matched. They dueled throughout the eight-lap race, but in the end it was Hinson with a surprise victory. With so many young riders cutting their teeth in the CMA, central Califomia promises to be home to some very fast riders for years to come. As guys like Hinson and Baptista get older, the racing will get even fiercer. If the swelling Mini-class gates are any indication, the CN future has no end in sight.
