Earls Eliminates 'em
By AARON AND ADAJII HANSEL
SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 28
With the season drawing to a close and the
race for points getting tighter, every rider was
giving it 110 percent on this night, especially
the Beginning Old·Timers.
Doug Rice grabbed the first-mota holeshot,
followed by Dan Earls, Steve Bennett and
Johnny Frank. Earls quickly commandeered
the lead from Rice, though, and immediately
began building a lead. In third, Bennett was a
good distance ahead of Frank and Jim Cruz,
but for some reason he opted to roll a double,
nearly allowing Frank and Cruz to pass him.
Fortunately for Bennett, Frank and Cruz both
cased the landing on either side of him and he
stayed a few lengths ahead. Even more exciting than the action on the track were the
antics of track photographer Adam Hansel. as
he failed a wild-looking attempt to lIvoid eating dirt after backing into a hay bale.
Back on the track, Earls was farther ahead
and looking comfortable there, while fifthplaced Cruz was making·a bid for fourth
against Frank. Earls caught up to the Novices,
who had started well before him in a split-gate
format, and the crowd was not h~ppy. Rice
was alone in second. As the end of the rZice
neared, the only action was between Frank
and Cruz, as Cruz hounded Frank mercilessly
for fourth. Cruz had showed Frank a wheel a
couple of times but was never able to make
anything stick until the final comer. Cruz put a
clean block-pass on Frank to take over fourth
and held on. The crowd cheered as Cruz and
Frank flashed across the finjsh line - and as
Adam Hansel tripped over the same hay bale
for the second time in one night.
Earls kicked off the second mota by edging out Rice and Bennett in order to secure the
holeshot. Going into the back section,
thumper riders Earls and Rice quickly accelerated away from the pack. Earls and Rice were
pushing each other, resulting in a fast pace.
Behind them, Bennett, Frank and Cruz almost
all collided with one another on the doubledouble. Somehow they all saved it and held
their positions, Heading into the second lap,
Earls now had about a one-second lead. Cruz
was doing his best to run down Rice, but he
nearly endoed over the treacherous doubledouble. Bennett came up to challenge for
third. With one lap to go, Earls still had the
lead, but he almost threw it away, getting way
out Sideways going down the start straight.
The battle for third was heating up, as Bennett
was applying strong pressure on Cruz. As it
stood, Earls would win if he managed to keep
it on two wheels. Rice just about had second
place wrapped up. The fight for third was still
raging on each comer, and Frank was within
striking distance if any of the top riders
slipped up. Coming around the final corner
into the whoops, Bennett was within a bike
length, but Cruz found some last-second trac·
tion and held on for third.
