With one round remaining, Yamaha rider Phil Gauthier wrapped up the season championship in the Masters Over 25 and Vet A divisions - and he did it convincingly, with four mota wins on the day. Gauthier has been the most successful rider in the fiercely contested series, but his four mota wins were not easy, as he had to fight through some traffic early on and overtake leader Matthew Frasch in two of those motos. Matt Hopkins was perfect on his start in the first mota of the day as he led 25 125cc Junior lads to the first turn on his YZ125. Dan Weinkauf was on Hopkins' tail, with "Flyin" Ryan Gilbert in tow. Hopkins quickly move out in front of the pack by four bike lengths as they reached the rhythm section. Jacob LaCount suffered a poor start but was moving through the pack, as was Kawasaki jockey Jake Dobbratz, who went from 12th to fourth after the first lap, ahead of LaCount. Hopkins doubled his lead by the end of the second lap and cruised to the first-mota win. Weinkauf and Gilbert maintained their positions to finish second and third, respectively. Dobbratz and LaCount battled to the end, with Dobbratz getting the nod for fourth. Hopkins again dominated the second mota to get the win. Matt Frasch finished fourth in the first mota but had victory in his mind for the second mota, and he jumped out to the lead to show Gauthier the way. Frasch held a nice lead for the first three laps but Gauthier stole it away in the back section near the sand wash to take the lead and the win. Frasch held on to second but finished third overall, behind Mineau. Tom Nielson grabbed the holeshot in the first Masters Over 25 mota, ahead of Frasch, Rob Hansen and Jeff Erickson, while Gauthier had some trouble getting off the concrete pad with some clutch problems, which n e _ s have plagued him recently. Frasch was on Nielson's heels when Frasch's Suzuki unexpectedly took a wicked kick and swapped hard over the offset high-speed single. Frasch quickly remounted in fifth, but the battle had just begun for Gauthier, as he came within striking distance of Erickson for second. Nielson went into the back section with a comfortable lead, only to stall his thumper, lettinl3 Erickson take over the reins, with Gauthier breathing down his back. Erickson held the lead for the rest of that lap until Gauthier powered his way past by outbraking Erickson to the next corner to take over the lead and cruise to the come·from-behind win. Matt Mraz jumped into the lead in the second mota, with Wills close behind. Weinkauf was fourth but moved into the lead in the uphill section, with Wills in second and Smul· ders moving Mraz out of the way for third.
