GFI Racing Fall Series North Round 3: Oatfield Raceway STORY BY JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS TURLOCK,CA,SEPT.16 four-moto sweep of the 125cc Wand 250cc Pro classes was a chore that Rusty Holland was certainly up for as the Clawson Motorsports rider showed up at Oatfield Raceway for round three of the GFI Racing Fall Series North and simply dominated every lap. Atop a pair of bone-stock Suzukis, Holland took uncontested wire-to-wire victories in three motos, and though Dieter Temmerman tried to disrupt Holland's streak with a holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto, Holland gained firm control of the lead by the end of the first lap. HoIland's presence was surprising to many, as the nearby Fresno resident has been absent from local motocross for quite some time. "I did the National Arenacross circuit this year and did real well," HoIland said. "After that was over, I went to Canada and contested a 10-round outdoor motocross series and finished fifth overall. So I leave town for a while and I come back here today and find out these guys, like [Steve] Mertens and [David] Boothe, are on the gas and that's good, because it makes me try a little harder each time out." Boothe certainly was on the gas, carding second overall in the 250cc Pro class with a 3-4 score and a third overall in the 125cc Pro class with a 4-2 effort. Consistency paid off for Boothe, and except for a run-in with Mertens in" the first 125cc Pro moto, he kept it on two wheels all day and clicked off fast lap times. "I ended up in good shape at the end of the day, and I'm happy with the results," said Boothe. "Me and Scott Davis had a good race in that last 250cc Pro moto, and I actually thought it was Mertens for most of the race. My dad said my lap times were consistent and that Holland wasn't that far ahead of us. It was just a fun race." Davis put in two strong second-place rides in the 125cc Pro class for runnerup honors, while a DNF in the second 250cc Pro moto ended his chances of a runner-up sweep on the day. After carding a second in moto one, Davis once again came out in moto two behind HoIland but went down hard on the third lap and called it a day. Missing from the front of the pack was Mertens. After proving in the first two rounds that he was the one to beat, the buzz in the pits was a muchanticipated Holland/Mertens battle. Unfortunately, those battles never transpired, as Mertens had one of the worst days he could remember, going down at least once in every moto. Always game, though, Mertens made (Right) Rusty Holland was the 12!5cc and 250cc Pro winner at round three of the GFI Racing Fall Series North, sweeping all four Pro motos. Many of the more than 500 riders on hand were anxious to get on the track, as Oatfield stays dormant all summer long. As usual, the Azevedo crew provided the racers with a meticulously groomed track that started the day fairly smooth, though as the day wore on, huge braking bumps occupied every turn entrance, making line choice critical. Yamaha pilot Arik Swan seemed to find the right lines and made a second-moto last-lap effort payoff as he topped the 250cc Novice class. Firstmoto winner Robert Blake appeared to be headed for the overall after grabbing another holeshot in the second moto, while Swan got a fourthplace start in the 15-rider field. However, as the moto progressed, Swan slowly closed in and outjumped Blake in a rhythm section on the white-flag lap to take the lead and the eventual win. Swan's 2-1 effort gave him the overall. Blake took runner-up honors after posting a 1-2 score. The Schoolboy class saw the return of Daniel Sani. After going down hard in practice at round one of the series, Sani took a little break and returned to take a solid victory with a 1-2 punch. For the second week in a row, class dominator Charlie Morrison suffered mechanical woes while leading. After getting the first-moto holeshot, the Honda speedster appeared to be headed for the win but suddenly pulled off the track with another engine seizure. Sani motored on for the win. Although Morrison returned to win moto two, Sani locked up the overall with a secondplace finish. Nick Davis (2-3) was second overall. In Pee Wee action, Polini-mounted Elric Flory came out a double-class (Above) Randy Sliva topped the first 125cc Beginner division In Turlock, Califomia. winner after acing all four motos in the 50cc (4-6) Stock Pee Wee Track class and the 50cc (4-6) Main Track class. KTM pilot Jordan Hausman duplicated Flory's feat with his own pair of victories in the 50cc (7-8) Stock Pee Wee Track crass and the 50cc (7-8) Main Track class. eN Oatfield Raceway Turlock, Califomia Results: September 1S, 2001 [Round 31 Pee Wee Track 50 (4-6) P/W JR: 1.
