Other wire-to-wire winners included Richard Pfanders, with his first win in the 600cc B class; Wayne Wagner, with an easy 125cc win; and John Lewis, who again took the 250cc B victory. Patrick Jacobsen held off usual 65cc-class hotshot Austin Greenland for that class win. CN Shippensburg Speedway Shippensburg, Pennsylvania Results: September 2, 2001 Shippensburg Speedway: Jared Mees (20) and Raun Wood (88A) went one-two In both the 600cc A and Sportsl)1an classes at the Paul Crumling Memorial Short Track event in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Mees missed out on a clean sweep of the weekend by just losing the 100cc race. Mees took the lead, but one of Crumling's close friends, Joe Dohm, had a slightly faster bike, and he slipped under Mees off the fourth tum on the fifth lap. R.J. Hart was a length or two behind Mees, and they kept constant pressure on Dohm to the checkers. After managing to DNF his way out of the Memorial race with a crash in the heat and a thrown chain in the semi, Rich Mellinger got serious in the 250cc A final. He took the lead from Bob Sweeten, Wood and Bill Bromley right at the start and rode 10 precise laps for the win. Wood managed to find an opening and took second from Sweeten on the sixth lap. Dave Smith took the Over 30 lead from Bromley, Dallas Baer and Jim Chapman. Baer motored his Battlefield H-D/Baer Racing Products-sponsored Rotax into second off the second tum on lap two and got by Smith on the fourth lap for the lead, with Bromley riding his coattails into second before Smith could recover. Smith took the 500cc lead over Chapman, Baer and Greg Sassaman. This time, Baer had a lot of trouble getting by the consistent low line of Chapman, finally getting by on the seventh lap - too late to put any pressure on Smith for the win. Mike Keane was the quickest of the Over 40 riders off the second tum, with Waldron, Tom Norton and Ray Greenland close behind. Entering the third tum on lap three, Waldron nudged his way under Keane for the lead. Keane then battled with Norton and Greenland for second to the end, with Norton getting the nod. Brandon Robinson used his quick start in the 85cc final to pull away from Mike Wagner, Evan Baer, John Long and Austin Greenland. Wagner was just quick enough to stay in front For the Open, the rules are fairly simple: Riders can never have held a professional license, and the machine must be a 125 or bigger. The 18 riders entered were pared down to 12 with three heats and a semi. In addition to his apparently easy win in the 20-lap Memorial, Mees also rode his Moroney's H-D/Fasthog/Michael's H-D Classics-sponsored Rotax to the 600cc A and Sportsman wins. Only Barney Waldron, in the Over 40 and 750cc classes, and Cassidy Heiser, in the 50cc Oil-Injected and 50cc (4-6) classes, were the only other doubleclass winners. For the past five years, this is the only night race at Shippensburg Speedway, and it has been a tacky, multi-grooved racetrack. On this night it was slick, somewhat dusty and had a narrower groove than the normal afternoon racetrack. In most of the races, the leader out of the second turn was the winner, although there was usually some fighting for positions. In the Sportsman final, Mees jumped out to an early lead over Raun Wood, Chris Klinefelter and John Winsett Jr. and maintained a steady 10-yard margin to the end. The 600cc A was very similar, except Bill Bromley's 600cc Rotax replaced Klinefelter's 250cc Honda in third. After two crash-related red flags, the Memorial Open took the green. As he had done all night, Mees was first out of tum two. Bryan Douglas, Greg Sassaman and last year's winner, Shawn Baer, rounded out the top four. Mees gave a clinic on how to master a groove track as he steadily added to his margin over Douglas. Baer, making his first start after breaking his leg in April, kept hounding Sassaman for third, but his lack of seat time during the layoff showed as he cruised to a save fourth in the late laps. 52 OCTOBER 17. 200t • cue I e n e _ s 50 (4-6): 1. Dominates Okeechobee Bv DIANA TAGGART OKEECHOBEE, FL, SEPT. 3 emorial Day had a great shOWing for the third round of the inaugural Fall Warm-Up Series. Jason Rosete led the way with 2-1 finishes in the 125cc C class and I-I finishes in the "Wildchild" 12-15 class. In the first 125cc C moto, Blake Koch snared the holeshot, with Jason Scott and Mike Morgan right behind. Rosete had spun out on the concrete start and was last off the gate, but somehow, through sheer determination, Rosete passed 17 riders to reach the second turn in seventh place. Meanwhile, Morgan passed Scott for second and then Koch to claim the lead. Rosete then passed Koch, but over the next jump, Koch reclaimed second. Rosete again blew by Koch, and this time he retained second, pulling away. Rookie 125cc rider Dean Dyess showed his strength, taking over third and looking to up the stakes. Morgan couldn't hold the pace against Rosete's challenge for first and gave it up after the ski double. Now the order was Rosete, Morgan and Dyess, with Cory Norvell taking over fourth. Dyess made his move on Morgan in the corner after the rhythm section, taking over second and leaving Morgan and Norvell in their own battle. Rosete and Dyess dueled for first on the second-to-Iast lap. Dyess pulled close to Rosete's back wheel; then Rosete pulled away a few bike lengths. Again, Dyess challenged; Rosete closed the door M with a quick twist of the throttle. Their combat continued for most of the fmal lap until the berm before the 80foot tabletop. Rosete made a slight miscalculation, giving Dyess the edge coming out of the turn, which enabled him to pass Rosete over the table before the last turn before the finish. Dyess took the checkers, with Rosete on his heels. Norvell successfully passed Morgan for third. "Arm pump from riding too tight and blowing that berm are what got the better of me that moto," Rosete admitted. "I only got about sixth off the start, so I had to work harder to get first," Dyess said. "The next moto, I need to get a better start." Koch absconded with the secondmoto holeshot, this time with Rosete right on his heels. Rosete passed the leader at the second turn before the infield tabletop and pulled away, leaving Koch and Norvell to fight for second. Norvell hammered past Koch on the second lap, with Morgan and Branden Abell on his heels, leaving Koch in fifth. Dyess was coming on strong, passing Koch and eyeing Abell in fourth. Meanwhile, Rosete had built his lead to five seconds. Dyess passed Abell for fourth. Morgan went down, leaving the door open for Dyess to slide right in; he then set his sights on Norvell. Rosete rode flawlessly to finish first. Norvell took second, ahead of Dyess by a knobby. Rosete returned in the first Wildchild 12-15 moto. Kyle Meeks took
