Smith Road Raceway: Orre Shane won the George Singler Sportsman Awart at the Jon Leak Memorial MX In Medina, Ohio. Ward Creek Vintage Comes to Ward Creek By CYNTHIA NEWTON Smith Road Raceway McConnell Hot at Jon Leak Memorial MX By CARL DAVIS MEDINA, OH, SEPT. 3 Kawasaki rider Kyle McConnell took the top Jon Leak Pride Award for his outstanding riding in the Mini classes at the fifth annual Jon Leak Memorial MX, held at Smith Road Raceway in Medina, Ohio. An overflow crowd made for a packed house reminiscent of the glory days of the '70s at Smith Road. Most of the classes had nearly full gates, and great weather for the first time in many years greatly added to the day's fun. McConnell repeated his performance from last year's mudfest to battle the same rider, his friendly rival Allen Jones, in both Mini classes. It went down to the wire in the final moto to decide the champion on the day. In the Mini Senior class, Suzuki rider Matt Szefcyk took both moto wins, leaving the Kawasaki-mounted duo of Jones and McConnell to battle it out. Jones held off the determined McConnell in both motos for second overail. McConnell finished third, and Corey Shaffstall and David Perek rounded out the top five. The Mini Junior class was one of the largest of the day and had to be split. Jones and McConnell again clashed, and again it went down to the wire in both motos. McConnell used good starts to his advantage in both motos to take the wins and the top Jon Leak Pride Award, with Jones claiming second. Mark Hummer took home the third-place Jon Leak Pride Award for his three-class effort RAYMOND, WA, SEPT.3 It was a great day at Ward Creek for the Northwest Maico and CZ National Post-Vintage MX Series race. Vintage racers had the opportunity to race on a modem track setup and couldn't have asked for better weather and track conditions. Rain the night before left the track in excellent shape. The track is natural terrain, with many challenges including several steep up- and downhills, lots of technical sections. awesome whoops, and tight comers. The Post-Vintage Series ran in conjunction with the Washington State Championships for modem bikes. This gave modem-bike riders and vintage-bike riders the opportunity to experience and witness each others' special expertise. Rarely do these two different eras of racing come in contact. During the Vintage race, the modem bikers came out of the pits to mingle with the spectators and took advantage of this special situation to interact with the Evolution· class of motocross. Allen Wen2el from San Ramon. California, and Jim Santell from Sandy, Oregon, battled it out in the 250cc Historic Expert class on their Huskies. Santell topped the class with a 1-1 win, and Wenzel came in a close second with a 2-2 tally. In the Expert Over 40 contest, Yamaha rider Mark Koont2 of Ocean Park, Washington: squeezed Suzuki jockey Jay Lael from Molalla, Oregon, out of first place with a 2-1 tally; Lael went 1-2 in a very close and exciting race. Los Angeles County Raceway: Chris Bond was the 125cc Beginner winner at the Outlaw Grand Prix In Palmdale, California. Honda pilot Dale Jacobus from Spanaway, Washington. experienced some bad luck in the first Grand Prix 500cc Intermediate moto. Jacobus was defeated by Marvin Newton of Redmond, Oregon, who swept the class with a 1-1 win. Ne~ton. on an awesome Maico, demolished Jacobus, who finished second overall with a DNF-2. The four other classes that ran in this Vintage event had only a single contender each. In the Historic Ultima 500cc Intermediate class, Fred Lasseter came all the way from Kingwood, Texas, to compete on his Suzuki. CZ rider Don Matthews from Terrabone, Oregon, contested the Grand Prix 250cc Intermediate class. Honda-mounted Flip Jones of Boring, Oregon, raced in the Grand Prix 250cc Novice class, and Husky man Dan Glenn of Lake Oswego. Oregon, ran in the Over 50 Novice class. All of them finished unopposed in their respective classes. OCTOBER 17, 2001 • cue •• II great show with his speed and spectacular jumping abili- ties. When the field hit the pavement section for the first time, which was about about a third of a lap into the race, Bond was running last, but a short time later he was starting to pick off the competition. Up front, Harker had his RMl25 flying around the track, and after a lap he had 10 seconds on Sabadin, who was up into second place.
