Gas Gas USA Pro Extreme Trials Series
Rounds 3-4: Ark Valley Trials Association
of taking the sections for granted,
shuffling through the debris and looking for tire grabbers.
"The front wheel must be put perfectly in place," Chaves said of the
need to have absolutely perfect wheel
placement in the loose shale outcroppings. "Both wheels have to be the
same every time - perfect. No room
for mistake."
Chaves knew what it would take to
have a good day and went about his
business proving it by cleaning the
first loop. Carpenter was second after
loop one with three single dabs, while
Topor-Madry paid for his impatience
with seven points - two Is and a five.
Topor-Madry settled down after
loop one and cleaned the two remaining loops, moving now at a slightly
slower pace. Carpenter dropped only
one on loop two but fell apart later,
losing eight on his final circuit.
Chaves continued his spectacular
string of rides, cleaning the final two
loops for a perfect score. A clean
event is really an amazing feat considering the pressures that competition puts on a rider and Chaves' perfection put him at the top of the
pe>dium for day one. Topor-Madry
was second with seven followed by
Carpenter with 12.
"My ride today, very good,"
Chaves said after the event. "I ride
perfect for three loops. The sections
were not too difficult, but concentration needs to be very good here."
Montesa-mounted David Black finished fourth with 24, while Sherco's Ron
Lee rounded out the top five with 29.
