Try as he might, Herrera was not able to get back around him, and he crossed the finish line in second. Canet finished third, followed by Carl Blake and Tyler Sandell. picking them back up there. As laps ticked by, the two leaders steadily pulled away from the rest of field. Cern icky would put a few bike lengths on Herrera on the front straight and outbrake him in turn one; then Herrera would catch him in the back-side turns such as Cat Box Corner, where they would sometimes go off the jump nearly side by side. By the halfway mark, the lead pair had put eight bike lengths between STORY AND PHOTOS BY DOUG KARCHER PORTlAND, OR, SEPT. 8-9 he Super TT American Racing Series (STTARS) Northwest Series Tour made a stop in Portland, Oregon, for its fifth of six rounds. The Rose City Cycle Fest, which featured a round of the Formula USA Roadracing Series and a Pro Singles round of the National Dirt Track Series, gave racers and spectators alike a full weekend of racing excitement and featured Novice through Premier classes. Super TT courses typically feature a combination of dirt and paved sections and at least one jump. Because it was run in the parking lot adjacent to Portland International Raceway, this event didn't have any natural-dirt sections or jumps. Organizers built a jump out of plywood and spread Tidy Cat in the hard left turn before the jump (dubbed "Cat Box Corner"), which made for some interesting racing. The flag dropped and racing got under way in the Premier class as A.J. Herrera got the jump on the field in the IS-lap Premier-class main event, followed into turn one by Mark Cernicky, Don Canet, Carl Blake, Joe Russell and Dan Stanley. It was Honda 500 against Honda 500 as the pair diced for the first two laps, with only Canet, on the Husky 610, able to keep pace with them. However, Cernicky was determined, and Herrera only held the lead for two laps before his Southwest (Super TT) Series rival IAbove) Mark Cemicky (foreground) dominated the Portland STTARS Super TT, scoring the win In the Premier class at the penultimate round of the Super TT American Racing series in Portland, Oregon. In his second Super TT start, Cernicky, the current Premier-class points leader in the STTARS Southwest Series, made the trek to Portland from his home in Santa Ana, California, to compete in this STTARS Northwest Series event. Riding with a very sore ankle and knee (which were injured in practice when his foot caught a tire marker, twisting it around), Cern icky nonetheless turned up the pace. Herrera stayed on him like they were tied together with a giant bungee cord, losing a few bike lengths here and them and Canet, with the rest of the pack a good 20 lengths further back, and the front-runners were beginning to catch backmarkers. Though heavily pressured by Herrera, Cern icky managed to hold down the lead until late on lap 14, when Cern icky found his line blocked by a backmarker. Herrera, seizing the opportunity, took a different line and got around him, n cue' • L/W: 1. Jason Daniel (Hon); 2. Tom Clouse (Hon); 3. Mark Jones (Yom); 4. Corey Hunter (Hon). M;W: 1.
