STORY AND PHOTOS BY RHED THOBE HOLLISTER, CA, AGG. 26 harlie Morrison stepped up from the minicycle ranks to the 125cc Intermediate class and posted the overall victory in his debut ride during the opening round of the CMC TransCal Series North, held at Hollister Hills OHVA. Morrison, with his new "Elvis black" hair, were up to speed right from the get-go. "This is just a stock CR 125 we got last week," he said. "I didn't change a thing, but I think it needs a bigger back sprocket." Morrison took the first-moto holeshot and appeared to be on his way to the victory, but a mishap later in the moto made him give way to Edge Sports racer Robert Harold. "I had this race won," Morrison explained, "but I washed out the front end at the top of the hill and kind of fell over." Harold went on for the moto win, with Morrison following behind in second. In the second moto, Morrison pulled a repeat holeshot and pulled away to a comfortable lead. "I changed to a 52-tooth rear sprocket, and it was a lot better," explained Morrison, who went on for the moto and overall victory, followed by Harold, Craig Tiede and Jarid Blevins. Pro racers Ryan Morais and Steve Mertens swapped Pro-class victories. Morais seemed up to speed in the 125cc Pro race on his Varner-tuned VZ, while Mertens appeared to have a sharper edge in the 250cc contest. "Well, I had a power advantage on Ryan in the 250cc race, since Ryan was on a four-stroke 250F and I was on my YZ250," Mertens said, "so I think I was just pulling him everywhere." 62 OCTOBER 10,2001 • II: U II: (Above) Ryan Morais (left) and Steve Mertens (right) swapped Pro-class victories in Hollister, California, with Morais winning the 125cc Pro race and Mel1ens topping the 250cc contest. Sani, whose last Mini race was a just few weeks ago at Loretta Lynn's, looked very comfortable on his new ride and posted the overall victory in front of Robby Baptista and Anthony Hauser. Jim "Hollywood" Holley was back in action at Hollister. Now more than 40 years old, Holley still had some of the best lines on the track. "Well, it's all for fun, you know," Holley said. "We are kind of just making a vacation of it. After this, we will head up to Reno." Holley busted out wins in the Over 30 Masters and Over 40 Masters divisions, winning four out of four motos. The Alessi boys were in attendance for what was perhaps their last race in blue. "I just wanted to win my last race on Yamahas before I start riding Hon-
