Northern Cup Motocross Series Round 8: Sports and Competition Gauthier continued his winning ways, as did Over 50 rider Mel Piontek. Wisconsin fast man Eron Ezerins seems to be back on the road to recovery, with moto wins in the 250cc A class. Alan Jonas led all the way in the Open class. _ Sports and Competition Denmaril, Wisconsin Results: August 26, 2001 [Round 9J right behind in fifth. Karnz posted a big win and his first overall in the series with 3-1 scores. O'Brien went 2-3 for runner-up. Points leader Fifarek lost a little ground in the points chase, going 1-4 for third. The 125cc B points leader, Tyler Smulders, had a rough outing in the first moto, finishing fourth behind Dan Weinkauf, Eric Weise and Matt Kasper. Smulders worked his way through the pack in the second moto to reel in Weinkauf on the last lap. Weinkauf left the door open coming down the hill before the checkers; Smulders pinned it through the corner to take the win by inches. Although Smulders got the moto win, Weinkauf's 1 -2 punch scored the overall. Smulders got second with a 4-1 tally, and Kasper went 2-3 for WMN: 1. Heather Roach; 2. Tracy Van Ryen; 3. STORY AND PHOTOS BY PETE EMME DE~K,~,AaG.26 H eavy rains fell the day prior to round eight of the Northern Cup Motocross Series, making the hilly, natural-terrain track a mucky and deep-rutted. More than 430 entries showed up, and Mini Junior 80cc rider Cody Sokolik inched one step closer to a championship in his division. Sokolik survived the muddy first-moto conditions to get past rival Jesse Frassetto, who is second in the points standings. Travis Frassetto took the holeshot away from Sokolik in the first moto, with his brother Jesse sitting in third. By the second corner, it was mayhem. Ruts as deep as 16 inches started to swallow the screaming 80s as they tried to conquer the hill. Sokolik and the Frassettos stayed hard on the gas, barely making it through the muck. Unfortunately, half the field got stuck on the hill; only seven of the 15 mired in the muck would make the end of the race. Once through the mess, the Frassettos and Sokolik had clear sailing. Travis led the first lap, but Sokolik got him in the back section and pulled out to a nice lead. Sokolik twisted the throttle past the lappers stuck on tlie hill with ease. The Frassettos just tried to stay upright. Sokolik posted a big win in the first moto, with Travis and Jesse rounding out the top three. Sokolik launched his Suzuki off the concrete pad into the lead in the sec- At round eight of the Northem Cup Motocross Series, Cody Sokolik looked stronger than ever In the Mini Junior 80cc division. The youngster aced both motos and should be on his way to a' class championship. ond moto, ahead of the Frassettos. Kyle Duppler sneaked into third, with Cody Simonton in tow. Simonton tried to pass Travis but slid out. Duppier was now fourth and Simonton sixth. Meanwhile, Sokolik cruised to victory and increased his points lead over Travis with two rounds to go. Jesse went 3-2 for second and Travis went 2-3 for third. Scott Fifarek scored the first-moto win in the Vintage class aboard his Honda. Ironman rider Shawn O'Brien kept him honest, finishing second. Don Karnz was third. O'Brien got a nice holeshot aboard his half-liter machine, with Karnz in second. Jon Hyde, Lance Dedering, Fifarek and Jamie Wotruba battled close behind. Karnz got close to O'Brien through the chicane, sticking a front wheel to the inside. Karnz held the line to the inside when they got to the whoop section and made th.e pass stick, moving into the lead. O'Brien lost some ground, while Hyde closed in. Wotruba moved into fifth, moving Dedering back in the pack. Karnz held a comfortable lead going into the final lap, while Hyde passed O'Brien. Fifarek made a valiant effort at the finish to pass O'Brien but fell. He remounted in fourth, with Wotruba It was a tough day for anyone to win both motos, especially with the conditions in the first set, but some riders tore off consecutive moto wins. Travis Frassetto and Taylor Williams in the two Mini Junior 65cc divisions scored them first. Sokolik, of course, won the Mini Junior 80cc class, while Michigander Jesse Zambon won the 125cc Junior and 125cc A classes. Sports and Competition president Chuck Cisler won both motos in the Sportsman A class without a challenge (no, really - without any challenge whatsoever). Vet A rider Phil (Below) Jesse zambon destroyed the 125 Junior and 125 A classes by winning all four molos at Sports and Competition In Denmark, Wisconsin. (Right) Don Kamz got his first overall win in the highly competitive Vintage class via 3-1 scores. He also finished third In 250cc C competition. cucl. n • _ SO • OCTOBER 10, 2001 59
