A typical Colorado thunderstorm swept over the track Friday evening, providing just the right amount of moisture to make the track ideal. The Leahy family did a great job of creating a Vintage-friendly racetrack. Another shower at the end of practice on Saturday morning made the track perfect. Corky Root is still on the sidelines from him injury at Honda Hills, but he did a great job of announcing for the day. Some of the fastest guys in AHRMA showed up for the Rumble, including four 2000 AHRMA National Champions: David Boydstun, Jeff Smith, Wes Willis and Ed Flanagan Jr. Boydstun, the AHRMA off-road director, began the Speed & Sports motocross with a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of Tuesday's senseless terrorists attacks and then followed with the playing of the national anthem. American flags were displayed throughout the pits and on many of the bikes, creating a very patriotic atmosphere. A subdued group of racers made it to the line for the first moto, which included the Premier Lightweight Experts. Boydstun jumped off the line to the first turn. He quickly moved out of sight of the rest of the pack and held that lead for the entire race. His performance was flawless. Boydstun repeated his performance in the second moto for a 1-1 finish. He finished the day with double wood with a 1-1 finish in the Premier 500cc class as well. lAbovel HoncIaI-mountecl Graham Barber (7eL) won both the Sportsman 250cc Ibpert ancl Sportsman l500cc Expert claues at the Rumble In the Rockies at Two RIvers Raceway In Milliken, Colorado. (Left! David Wilson (30T) rode his Rickman-Triumph to the Premier Open Twins Expert victory. Graham Barber, riding a 400cc Kawasaki that looks like an Elsinore, was the sleeper of the day. He walked away with double wood via 1-1 finishes in both the Sportsman 250cc Expert and Sportsman 500cc Expert events. Robin Webster powered her 400cc Maico to a 1-1 finish for the day in the Women's Intermediate class. Mark Skarpohl, undoubtedly the fastest guy of the day on his twin-pipe CI, had back-to-back races in the Over 40 and Classic 500cc motos, capturing 1-1 and 2-1 fmishes, respectively. Chad Mcintosh, this year's current Classic 500cc champ, gave him a run for the money with 1-2 wins. Flanagan, returning after a horrendous crash at Sears Point, jumped off the gate and was qUickly out front of Robert "CI Bob" Borg. It was a close race in the corners, b.ut Flanagan slammed the door to take home the wood with a 1-1 finish in one of the most exciting races of the day. In the Over 50 contest, "Diamond" Don Rainey got an unbelievable holeshot and just kept shifting gears on his Halpin Honda Elsinore, making Wes Willis really work for the lead. Rainey kept up the pressure but Willis pulled an unexpected pass on the outside to walk away with 1-1 wins. Diamond finished with a 3-3 and walked away happy with his wood. Jeff Smith still has what it takes to be a champion. He drove his BSA to 1-1 finishes in the Over 60 Expert class. Instead of sticking around for the trophy presentation, Smith was off to play 18 holes of golf. Chris Richardson has finally found his line. After some great finishes in Honda Hills and Portland, Chris rode to a 1-1 win in the Open Age class. He rode four laps with a broken clutch cable. If the season had just a few more races, Richardson would be a real contender for the National Championship. The Leahy family rounded out an awesome day by providing barbecue and beer. If you missed this race, plan on including it in your schedule next year. There's nothing like racing "" U "" •• n _ ...... S • OCrOBER 10. 2001 57
