short laps, Satchwell had moved into third and was making time on the leaders. Whitmore had followed her around Reed and was now in fourth. . Bau continued to pressure Mann, but to no avail. Mann held tough and took the moto win, thus claiming the overall as well. Bau held on for second; her 5-2 score gave her fourth overall on the day. Satchwell had more problems near the end of the moto and dropped back in the pack, letting the hard-charging Whitmore into third; with a 1-2 tally, Whitmore took second overall. Satchwell worked her way back into fourth, and with a 2-4 finish she took the last spot on the podium and added a few valuable points to her lead - Satchwell now has a six-point lead over Bau going into the final round of the series. Sweden's Elin Mann crossed the pond and gave everyone an unexpected shock by winning the overall victory at the penuhlmate round of the WML Bell-Ray Women's MX Championship Series in Binghamton, New York. On the last lap. Satchwell made a mistake and went down, letting Whitmore into the lead. Satchwell remounted quickly. but Whitmore was gone and she had to settle for second. Mann held on for third. and Reed put in a good ride. taking fourth in the moto. Patterson suffered bike troubles while in fifth and had to drop out of the moto. Bau suffered a hard crash early in the moto. tearing cartilage between her ribs; she rode hard through the pack and took fifth in the moto. KTM pilot Heidi Cooke, the Canadian Women's National Champion, started dead last; she moved up to sixth but had some bike troubles and ended the moto in eighth. In moto two, Whitmore once again got the jump on the other riders. taking the holeshot - but it was shortlived. as she spun out on the face of the second jump, surrendering the lead to Reed. However. Reed had her hands full with Mann, Altex Electronics/Thor-backed Kawasaki jockey Kristy Myers, Bau. and No Fear/Vamer-sponsored Honda rider Bonnie Warch, who were all close behind. Mann watched Reed closely and made her move toward the end of the first lap. Mann was riding a blistering pace and, once in the lead. she started to pull away. Bau knew she had no time to waste and was soon in second and putting pressure on Mann. By lap three, Mann and Bau were within two bike lengths of each other. Satchwell came from a 10thplace start to fourth, and Whitmore had come from seemingly out of nowhere and was in fifth. New York. with New Zealander Tania Satchwell and Stefy Bau in a close points battle for the number-one plate. Dublin. California's Sheena Patterson was holding down third. with Cheboygan, Michigan's Sarah Whitmore close behind, and they were having a battle of their own to be the top finishing American in the series. The shocker of the weekend came when Elin Mann from Kareby, Sweden, made the long trek over the pond and took the overall. At the drop of the gate for the first Pro moto, No Fear/FMF/Yamaha's Whitmore immediately got out front, with Troy Lee Designs/DNKY/Husqvarna-backed Mann, AGP/Answer's Satchwell, and RRP/UFO/Hondabacked Bau close behind. Satchwell showed everyone why she's the points leader by moving into second and was soon on Whitmore for the lead. On the second lap, Satchwell overtook Whitmore, but Whitmore didn't let her get away. Whitmore kept Satchwell within two second for the next couple of laps. as their battle pulled them to almost 15 seconds ahead of Mann, in third. At the halfway point of the moto. Satchwell and Whitmore wee still within 2 1/2 seconds of each other, and Mann was still in third. with KTM rider Tiffany Reed fourth, MSR/Pro Circuit/Plano Honda's Jacki Hudson fifth, and Cycle Gear-backed Suzuki jockey Patterson. who got a dismal start. sixth. As the moto wore on. T 50 OCTOBER 3. 2001 • cue • • BINGHAMTON. NY. AUG. 25 he WML series has brought together several of the best talents in women's racing to compete in a series that can showcase how good these girls really are. Broome had some of the best racing of the year. and the fan response proved that the sport is still growing. The classes are competitive, and when the dust settled in Binghamton. the title chases were still too close to call. As the riders came together through the first turn in the first Amateur moto, Maxxis/Thor-backed Honda rider Amber Pickett, Kawasaki pilot Cheryl McCullough, and Yamaha-mounted Denise Bayless were all in close proximity for the holeshot. (McCullough was later credited with the holeshot.) McCullough opened up a small lead, but by the end of the first lap, CDR-backed Kawasaki jockey Je~sye Davis had moved into second and was closing the gap. Abbie Bardo. Kaide Garrett. Amber Gordon and Amber Farley followed Davis. who wasted little time getting around McCullough and started to pull away. By the halfway point of the second lap, McCullough was now under fire from hard-charging Kawasaki rider Farley. Close behind Farley were Garrett, Bardo and Bayless. The running order remained the same for the remainder of the moto, with Davis extending her lead. McCullough holding on to second, Farley making a good charge but having to settle for third, Garrett placing fourth and Bayless taking fifth. In moto two, McCullough once again took the holeshot, with Garrett and moto-one winner Davis in tow. The first lap showed several changes in the order. and as they came around to start lap two. Garrett was T now in tbe lead. Next in line were Suzuki jockey Philo Petricig, Davis. Farley, McCullough and Gordon. As the second lap went by. Davis charged into the lead and McCullough went down in a tough section. McCullough hit the ground three times before she finally settled down and got back under way. Davis, now out front, started to put time on the rest of the field. Garrett, in second. was soon under pressure from Farley, who made her move on lap three. Davis proved that moto one was no fluke and took the moto win, followed by Farley. Garrett, Petricig and Bayless. RTS haf ·on, Broome-TIoga Sports Center: Jessye Davis was the winner of the Amateur portion of the filth round of the WML BellRay Women's MX Championship Series in Binghamton. New York.
