In the fist Mini mota, Fox-backed Kawasaki rider Kimberly Kocher got the jump on the other girls and came around the first corner first. Not far behind were Honda-mounted Rory Packwood and Yamaha rider Kayla Olson. Olson was on the gas, quickly moving into second and making up ground on Kocher. By the end of the first lap, Olson made a statement by taking the lead from Kocher and starting to pull away. Kocher eventually got settled and put a dent in Olson's lead, but Olson was already too far gone. Olson held on for the win, with Kocher second, KTM rider Lindsey Myers third, Yamaha rider Ashley Jones fourth, and Packwood fifth. Mota two started almost the same as mota one - with Kocher grabbing the holeshot but soon overtaken by Olson. Almost as soon as Olson was in the lead, Packwood slipped by them both and checked out. With Packwood nowhere in sight, Olson kept charging, hoping to keep Kocher behind her and take the overall. Olson was doing well until the last lap, when she crashed and gave second place and the overall to Kocher. Packwood, with a 5-1 score, took third overall on the day. CN . . . . .-Tla.. KB Motocross Link Connects on a Win By AARON AND ADAM HANSEL SACRAMENTO,CA,AUG.24 After the gate dropped for the first Schoolbey Beginners mota, Randy Fields had an edge on the pack as he came into the first corner. Fields rocketed out of turn one, followed by Jared Unk, Jacob Logan and Dustin Brooks. Logan immediately dived inside of Link to make the pass, but Unk ceme back right away to cleanly retake his position in second. Fields and Unk began to motor awey from the pack, partly due to the fact that Brooks had caught up to Logan and the two of them were holding one another up in an intense battle for third. Brooks had managed to build a small lead at the start of the race, but now Unk was running strong and was closing_ Unk must have gotten a bit anxious, as he had began to commit small errors that were costing him time. but Brooks ended up going down in the whoops anyway, handing Unk a lead that was only going to get larger due to a large, trafficimpeding crash back in the pack involving several bikes. It appeared as though Link had an easy win, but Logan had somehow man M aged to break free from Brooks and was mounting a charge - but it was too late. Unk bagged the mota win, followed by Logan, Brooks and Billy Randall. At the start of the second moto, Link slid into the l80-degree right-hand first tum ahead of everyone else. He was followed by Jeremy Zellers and Fieids. On the ensuing comer, a traffic jam occurred that affected everyone but the leader, Link. The bumping and jolting dropped Fields back to sixth and Logan back to fifth. Fields and Logan were banging bars his lead. Fields turned it up a notch, though, and managed to make the pass stick through the whoops. After a lap, Link was still out in front with an untouchable lead. Midway through lap two, the fun started; A bobble by Fields allowed Logan just enough room to power past. Trying to catch up, Fields collided with Brooks over the double-double, taking them beth out. Blake Degmetich, who was close behind, was unable to see the carnage and didn't see the flagger in time. Deg· 5.2287 seconds to take the class lead and set a new fast time. Arnold Jelinek was nearly as fast on his KTM 550 as he topped the hill in 5.2817 seconds for second place. Donaldson also improved his time, but his 5.2984-second run ieft him in third place, with Todd Cipala and Kurt Koester filling out the top five. An intense battle in the 750cc class has been waged all year by the three leaders, Todd Cipala, Eric O'Conner and Kaleb Northrup, each of whom had one win apiece metich had no time to correct after landing lead over hJs two challengers, and a win for out near the front. Zellers had moved up to into two, with Chris Manchester and Faria in three and four. Faria got a great gate and went out on top. Oxley wes right behind him. Nobody was going to unseat these two and they were on their way to the main. Manchester and McDougall would get one more shot in came into this event with a very slim points riders, bringing the paramedics running. Back race of the night, the Scratch majn, and Bobby Schwartz won the Handicap main. In the first Scratch semi, the pole went to Sean McDougall. "Rad" Brad Oxley loaded in the previous three district climbs. Cipala and cartwheeled hard over the other downed On this night, the vets showed the youngsters how it's done. Mike Faria won the richest him might just clinch the points champi· onship. It didn't play out that way, however, as O'Conner sailed his Kawi triple over the top in 6.1902 seconds to take the first-round lead, with Cipala in third with a 6.8873-second run and Northrup well back in the pack due to a wild, nearly out-of-control ride. In the second round, however, Northrup delivered a straight and fast 6.1 164-second time to slip under O'Conner, who failed to improve on his first ride. With all attention focused on the three third, despite riding with no goggles. Logan was running in fourth but was obviously gassed and succumbed to a brilliant last-ditch pass by Jason Dias. When the checkers flew, Jared Unk was there to claim them, followed by Randall, Zellers and Dias. R.sults 50 YOOSJJZ: I. Chris Decoque (Yam); 2. Jesse Janco (Yam): 3. Tl1Ivis Timm (Yam): 4.
