STC Stubbs Cycles Stars Over Texas Night Series Round 3: 290 Motocross Park Kreft Kicks It at 290 Bv BRIAN COMEAU WALLER, TX, A()G. 18 he STC Stubbs Cycles Stars Over Texas Night Series continued at 290 Motocross Park after a three-week layoff. The series has reached the halfway point and, with more than 360 entrants making it out, is showing no signs of abating. Though the evening was long, the racing was great. Colby Kreft took the holeshot in the first 125cc Schoolboy moto, with Charles Castloo right behind him. Trailing the leaders were Rusty Moffatt, Sean Cherry and Brandon Jenkins. Kreft and Castloo were wrapped up in their own little race for the lead, pulling away from the field in short order. Castloo was looking for an opening, and as the second lap ended he inched ever closer. Just before the sweeper, Castloo made his move. Coming in hot on Kreft, he clipped ~ the Extreme Motorsports-sponsored Kreft and was left in the dirt. Castloo remounted in eighth and would have to wait for the second moto to challenge Kreft. With Castloo out of the picture, Moffatt moved into second, ahead of Cherry and Jason Jameson. Kreft had an easy last lap, taking first ahead of Moffatt and Cherry. Jameson was able to hold off Jenkins for fourth. Castloo got the break he needed in the second moto, taking the early lead ahead of Moffatt and Kreft. Cherry, Jenkins, Michael Holt and Justin Sims were caught up in a huge battle for fourth. Kreft passed Moffatt on the second lap and set out after Castloo's KTM, but the race for the lead never materialized. When the checkers fell, Castloo took the moto win and third overall with his 6-1 score, beating out Cherry's 3-4 score. Kreft's 1-2 tally T still earned him first overall, ahead of Moffatt (2-3). John Piper took the holeshot in the first 250cc Beginner moto, ahead of Rick Hutchinson and David Brown, with Jeff Nobles and Grant Patterson in fourth and fifth, respectively. Hutchinson couldn't hold off Brown for long, as the Suzuki rider took over second before the end of the first lap. Patterson and Nobles passed Hutchinson on the second lap. By the time the white flag came out, Brown was challenging Piper for the lead. Brown and Patterson passed Piper before the Alpinestars jump, sending Piper back to third. Brown took the lead and never looked back. Behind him, Piper realized he had one last chance to get second place. He went to the outside and dived under Patterson in the last corner, taking the position back in dramatic fashion and ending the moto in second. Proven Productions-sponsored Nobles jumped into the lead early in the second moto, with Patterson trailing and first-moto winner Brown following in third. Piper, who finished in the runner-up spot in the first moto, found himself buried in the pack. He finished out the first lap in sixth, pressuring Herman Teale for fifth. He passed Teale on the second lap and was set to track down the leaders. Piper continued to play catch-up, next passing Craig Simmons for fourth. On the third lap, the race took a sudden turn, with Patterson and Nobles tangling after a jump, leaving both riders injured on the ground and moving Brown into the lead, with Piper behind him in second. At the finish, it was Brown, with Piper edging out Simmons for second. Charlie Bravo and Teale took fourth and fifth, respectively. 5/1'100 P{W: I. Beau Baldwin (Cob); 2. Mason Roy (Pol); 3. Lucas Windham took the holeshot, ahead of Steven Ball, in the first 85cc Open moto. Bill Derks was holding off Daniel Garrett early, with Ronnie Shaffer in fifth. Shaffer had to com· pete with a charging Ricky Davis, who snatched fifth away from Shaffer on the second lap. Back up front, Windham had opened up a sizable gap on the field. Ball now found himself a lonely second, holding off Derks. Garrett had his hands full with Davis, who was headed to the front fast. The two raced wheel to wheel until the last lap, when Davis put the moves on Garrett and took over fourth. At the finish, it was Windham, ahead of Ball and Derks. Garrett was unable to come back at Davis, who took fourth, ahead of the Highlands KawasakijEBR-sponsored Garrett. Windham jumped out front early in the second moto, with Ball holding down second. This time, Garrett found himself ahead of Derks and Davis. Windham ran a solid moto, leading every lap on his way to a 1- 1 finish. Ball rode to a strong second for second overall, ahead of Derks, who went 3-4 for third overall. Garrett finished the night in fourth overall, ahead of Davis (4-5), who rounded out the top five. eN 290 MotaeI'Dss Park Waller, Texas Results: August 18, 2001 (Round 3 of 5J WMN OPEN: 1. Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series Round 11: Shelby Supercross Slip-Slidin' at Shelby rolled. A few seconds after that, the rain came down in torrents, making all the track-watering unnecessary. The JMX kiddie wading pool, earlier so busy with little ones in search of water fun, was suddenly abandoned. Cool - no dustl Practice was suspended for a few minutes while the most intense part of the storm passed. When the time came for the riders' meeting, the raindrops slowed obligingly and then ... stopped altogether. You couldn't buy even a tiny rain shower during the week at Shelby, North Carolina. Hot and dry were the words most used, though humid was in the running, too. Even so, 300 or so riders showed up for round 11 of the Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series, with all the water and sports drinks they could pack into coolers. The JMX water trucks had put down thousands of gallons on the thirsty track, and for practice the conditions verged on too dry. However, as practice proceeded, hot turned to merely warm, then almost cool, as the clouds gathered and thickened.
