attendance, and demonstrating the
meaning of the word fast. The
FMF /MSR/Mom and Pop-backed
McSwain ran off and hid in both the
50cc Shaft and 50cc (4-6) contests,
aboard different bikes. Local fast kid
Adam Bowen of Shelby was the closest to "the heat" in those classes, easily outdistancing Addison Parrish and
Colby Morse but having long stretches
of ground to make up before coming
within striking distance of McSwain.
To his credit, Parrish won the 50cc (46) qualifier by being the only rider to
cross the finish line. That race came
early enough in the rotation that the
slippery goo proved a bit much for the
rest of the little guys. And McSwain
opted to sit out the qualifier, along
with half the field.
Aside from McSwain, there were
several others who scored double
wins: McSwain's cousin Chelsea sponsored by Axo, IMS, Smith Goggles, Paw Paw, and MX East - buttoned up the 50cc (7-8) and 65cc
(7-9) wins; IMC Inc./BDR Racing's
Michael McQuay dominated the 65cc
(10-11) and Junior Mini classes; Suzuki of Gastonia's Brad Hinson owned
the Senior Mini and Supermini divisions; and Christopher Fowler claimed
the 125cc D and Unlimited D victories.
As the track dried, the racing
action improved. (Mind you, the track
never did get exactly dry ... it was
more like snot on a doorknob.) Even
though Darrell Driver didn't win two
classes because he wadded his Suzuki in the whoops while going for the
lead in the 250cc C contest, his experience in Unlimited C was typical of
the majority of the main events.
The Unlimited C qualifier winner,
Suzuki of Gastonia/Driver Equipment
Company's Driver dropped the hammer on the main-event start a tenth
of a second later than Cycle Plus/G

Sport/New Hope Care Center/Upstate
Motocross/Nobles Trucking's Tim
Myers, who grabbed the holeshot.
Suzuki-Kawasaki of Gastonia/Piedmont Auto Glass of Gaffney-sponsored Suzuki rider Jeff Davis stepped
up to elbow his way to the front as
well, making it a three-way battle for
the lead. Chris Gantt and Josh Brady,
who had finished second and third in
the qualifier, tangled on the mainevent start and, though unhurt, never
threatened to crack the top five.
Halfway through the five-lap race,
Driver slid around Myers on the
infield section and proceeded to "get
wide," as the NASCAR saying goes.
Considering the slickness of the track
and the rider's relative inexperience
with big bikes, how ml!ch of the gyrations designed to prevent
pass by
Myers were intentional on Driver's
part is unknown. Suffice it to say that
Driver handled the Suzuki past the
checkered flag in front of everyone
else, unscathed. After an extended
and physical debate on position, second through fifth looked like this:
Davis, Adam Sommerville, Myers,
Stephen C. Kepley - muddied, but
unbowed.

Saturday evening's activities slarted at 5

donated all the food but also tumed out to be
one the best chefs in the area. grilling dozens
