Cal-Expo Speedway: Eric Carrillo leads Bart Bast and Chad Fellclo to the checkered flag
in the Scratch main event in Sacramento, California.
one familiar with speedway could easily
understand just how good a start Carrillo must
have golten in order to beat the field to the
first corner. Felicio's pole position afforded
him the opportunity to reach the first bend in
second place, but he soon found himself pressured by Bast as the field entered the back
straight. Carrillo continued his run after his
spot-on gate and led Felicia into the second
set of turns by a couple of bike lengths. Bast
continued to work on Felicio and eventually
took over second place, but by that time Carrillo was dialed in, hooked up and counting his
money on his way to the checkered flag
aboard his Silkolene/Tsubaki/Motowear/
Jawa/Goat Jawa. Bast maintained second,
Felicio rolled home third, and Hedden made
sure nobody got behind him and finished
fourth.
Bast turned the tables in the Handicap
main, coming from the back yardage to take
the win ahead of runner-up Carrillo and Feli-
cia, who managed to finish third in both
mains. Scratch-line starter Scolt Olney led the
opening laps but fell to fourth place when Carrillo, Bast and Felicio moved him off the pole.
Paul Orlandi struggled with the outside line
and finished fifth. Jimmy "The Jammer" Sise-
more, making a very rare speedway appearance. qualified for the main but failed to join
the field for the start and was credited with
sixth.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 28
With a break at the midpoint of the No Fear
Summer Series and temperatures hovering in
the gO-degree range, Racing Enterprises
Motorsports put on their weekly Saturday
motocross for a large turnout of racers, including the whole Riverside Old-Timers crew.
George Tompson beat the I 7 other competitors in the Vet Beginner division with a pair
of solid rides. In the first go-around, Pro Valve
Motocross Race Service-backed Honda rider
Richard Oliver ripped the holeshot, with Allen
McKay, Jason Chism, Joe Sutter and Tay
Burgess in tow. Tompson got a bad start and
was ninth at the end of lap one, but he had
miraculously moved up to fourth by lap three.
Out front, Oliver put a three-second gap on
the field while riding quickly and smoothly.
Tompson was relentless, and he was up to
second by halfway. As the moto wore on.
Tompson steadily cut into Oliver's advantage.
With two laps to go, Tompson made his move
and slipped by into the lead. Once out front.

B&R Promotions dirt-track races held at the
Aitkin County Fairgrounds. Paul and Lauberscheimer have been trading wins throughout
the season, but Paul seems to be gaining
momentum, notching his second consecutive
win, and, with only a few races left on the
schedule, it looks like the bid for the championship is going to go right down to the wire.
Sounds like pretty serious stuff, doesn't it?
You couldn't tell by hanging around in the pits
with these youngsters. This is how Paul "prepares-for his upcoming races: As 125cc racer
Travis Waschek and this author were strolling
through the pits. Paul leaped out from behind
an upcoming trailer, threw his arms up in the
air and yelled -Wazzzuppp!"
"Who the heck was that little guy?" I
asked.
"I don't know his name," Waschek replied,
"but I know he's good."
Well, I know who that little tike is now.
He's the one who displayed a makeshift
"Camel Pro" tuck as he and Lauberscheimer
raced side by side down the straights during
their dice for the lead in the Mini Shaft main
event. With the crowd cheering in anticipation,
the race wasn't decided until the checkered
flag flew. On this day, it was Paul's turn to
score the win ahead of Lauberscheimer, with a
consistent group of racers in tow that included
Cole Anderson, Dominic Ray and Brandon
Moyer.
What did Paul do to celebrate his victory?
He was later seen displaying the rewards of a
successful frog hunt.
More than 20 classes were brought to the
line throughout the day. An elated Richard
Waschek turned in a strong performance in
the Over 30 class, pulling the holeshot and
remaining in front to score an exciting win
ahead of a host of fast guys, including Vintage
Single and Open Amateur winner Brian Jenson, first-year racer Trent Mobraaten, and
notable hotshoe Randy Thistle. Kevin Walter
won the Amateur National 50cc Chain class at
Indianapolis this summer. and he didn't disappoint, scoring a wire-to-wire win during the
main event.
Jenson's win in the Vintage Single class
came after a race-long duel with Bob Becker,
who was looking for an upset as he pulled to
the outside of Jenson during their final charge
to the checkers, but Jenson prevailed by inches. Ed Hampe. Craig Abresch and Dan Cunningham were not far behind.
Josh Koch continues to dominate the 80cc
class, but a recent purchase of a Honda 250
from former District 23 Open Pro champ
Verdeen Langland may soon have Koch in the
winners' circle in the Open Amateur and
250cc Amateur classes. The formidable
youngster has turned in strong performances
in the bigger classes and seems to be adapting·well.
The upset of the day came in the Open
Mini class when Cameron Means scored the
win to put an end to Trackstar Motorsportsbacked Jake Mataya's winning streak.
