C~ By BART NEW!'IAN BUCHANAN, MI, JULY 28 John Penrod was on the gas, winning both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes by using great lines and high-flying antics, tackling laRocco's Leap lap after lap at Red Bud's first Amateur race following the AMA Chevy Trucks National event on July 1. In the first 125cc A moto, Brian Schuiteman nailed the holeshot, pulling the 17-rider field through the first three turns and over Red Bud's famous ski jump. Schuiteman's bobble heading up the Monza wall was the opening that Andrew Thyberg was waiting for, and he passed Schuiteman for the lead. Behind them, Penrod, Mitch Dervin and Jamie Beckett were all swapping paint on their Yamahas. Schuiteman used the ponies of his Yamaha and the fast second-turn outside line to retake the lead form Thyberg. Once out front, Schuiteman quickly pulled out a 10-bikelength lead on Thyberg, who now had his hands full with Penrod. The race for fourth took an odd twist when Dervin planted his YZ into the track fencing, ending his race prematurely. Dervin's mishap allowed Nate Mmer and Corey Paulsell to work their way into the top five. With only haif a lap to go, it looked like Schuiteman had the moto locked up, when a miscue after the launch pad allowed Penrod to move right onto his rear fender. Penrod made the pass on the outside heading up LaRocco's Leap, only to lose it when Schuiteman took advantage of his position on the inside of the following tum to motor on to the win, with Penrod just a tick back in second. Thyberg was third after turning away a last-lap charge of Miller, who finished fourth. Paulsell rounded out the top five. In moto two, Schuiteman led the pack through turn one, but Penrod used his fourstroke's power to motor around the second tum and into the lead entering tum three. Once in front, Penrod turned on the afterburners and never looked back, opening up an insurmountable lead. As the pack made its way out of the orchard section and over the valley triples, Miller was now in second, feeling the pressure from Thyberg and Schuiteman. By the end of lap three, Penrod was out front and cruising at a very fast pace, while Miller, Thyberg and Schuiteman battled over second, allowing Pauisell and Joey Sly to close some ground on the lead pack. At the checkered flag, it was Penrod with a wide margin of victory over Miller, who keep Thyberg at bay the entire race despite Thyberg's best efforts. Schuiteman was fourth, with Paulsell fifth. The Red Bud crew did a great job of laying out a nearly perfect track for the 452 riders who made the trek to the home of Michigan's biggest outdoor professional motocross. Los Angeles County Raceway The Mighty Casey Scores By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE, CA, JULY 28 Casey White split moto wins with Ryan Gee to top a large field of 125cc Beginners at Los Angeles County Raceway during the Texas Cattle Company-sponsored round of California Racing Club's Saturday night motocross. Gee and White went at it over the lead right from the drop of the gate in moto one. White was all over Gee for the entire mota but had to settle for second place, just a bike length behind, at the checkers. KTM-mounted Robby Wilbert held off a determined Ryan Butts for third, and Jimmy Soliz slipped past Charles Price on the last lap for fifth. Casey grabbed the second-moto start ahead of Gee, Soliz, Butts and the rest of the field. Gee went down on the opening lap and had to start all over again from around 10th place, while Butts block-passed Soliz for second place. White easily pulled away for the decisive victory. Gee charged the entire mota to finish a respectable fourth and claim the second-place trophy, over the 4-3 score of Butts. Wilbert (3-5) and Tony Sena (9-2) rounded out the top five. Taylor Kellstrom and his 2002 YZ85 were untouchable in the first 80cc Beginner moto; he took the win over Jason Stulbaum and Tim Ritzier. Kellstrom got the holeshot in mota two and fended off challenges from both Christian Melhorn and Ritzier for a sweep of the class. Stulbaum went 2-5 to edge out the 4-4 score of Melhorn for third overall, behind Ritzier. The Vet Novice first-mota victory went to Suzuki-mounted Chris Carroll, but not without a fight to the finish from Will Lubin and Doug Ford. Lubin emerged with the second-moto holeshot and was quickly joined by Robert Goettling, Carroll and Ford. Goettling was handed the top spot when Lubin went down in a rutted corner. Carroll had trouble in the same turn, which allowed Ford to move up into the runner-up position. Ford slowly reeled Los Angeles County Raceway: Casey White was the 125cc Beginner winner during California Racing Club action in Palmdale, California. in Goettling, making the pass on the whiteflag lap to earn the overall on a 3-1 night. Lubin (2-3) came out on top of a points tie with Carroll (1-4) for second overall. Results P/W YAM BEG: I. POIlI Addington (Hon); 2. Aubrey Gainer (SIlZ); 3. MIchael Aqllino (Yam): 4.
