CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series Round 6: Arizona State Fairgrounds side. Schuler greeted the checkers first, with Robert, Miklos, Mennenga, Noriega, Park and Hatfield rounding out the top seven. Joshua Schuetta took the overall in the 250cc Intermediate class after his rival Dustin Hamby crashed out in the first moto. However, it was Schuetta's spirited ride in the second Big Bike Open moto that was worthy of mention. Schuetta had mechanical problems in the first moto, which Michael Blose easily won. In the second moto, Schuetta got the early lead on the pack and was looking to check out. Blose had started in fourth on his 125, but he went by Kevin Harshman and Billy Swapp by the second lap. Schuetta's lead had disappeared as Blose was hounding him. With two laps left, Blose tried to force a blockpass under Schuetta but ended up going down. The Cochise Motorsportsponsored Schuetta held on for the moto win, followed by overall winner Swapp, Harshman and a recovered Blose. STORV AND PHOTOS BV ROBERT VAN DAMME PHOENIX, AZ, JULY 21 ryan Allen and Bob Miklos took the overall in their respective classes at the sixth round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Series, presented by Mel Clayton, FMF, Gordy's, AEO, Franklin and Bent. Allen won the Pro class with a 2-1 score after battling it out with longtime Pro Robert Naughton. Miklos took the overall in Over 30 Junior division, tallying a 1-3 score. Miklos made the first moto look easy, but he had to come from behind in the second moto after a bad start. Some 284 riders braved the evening heat to compete in the final round of the series. In several classes, the series champions would be determined in the final round. In the first moto, Naughton pulled the holeshot, followed by Allen and Troy Kalina. Naughton and Allen set a pace that pulled them clear of Kalina. For the next two laps, Naughton started to distance himself from Allen, but Allen closed the deficit to within two bike lengths of Naughton by just past the halfway mark, though he couldn't get close enough to attempt a pass. Naughton took the checkers with Allen in tow, and Kalina finished third. Naughton was leading at the start of the second moto. Allen was sitting second until the two got into the infield section. Naughton tried to hold the inside position but Allen squeezed underneath and took the lead. Then, P/W (4-6): 1. Baney Bruner (Cob): 2. Cody Thomas (Cob); 3. Tristan Hunter (KTM); 4. B on the next lap, Naughton got a better drive from the outside coming onto the back straight and passed Allen for first. Kalina, in third, was content to have the best seat for watching the battle up ahead. Allen recovered and made another run at Naughton. Just at the halfway point, Allen got the inside position on Naughton going into the whoops. In the next corner, leading onto the back straight, Naughton tried again from the outside to drive around Allen, but Allen had just enough room to get in front of Naughton and disrupt his drive just before the plateau jump. With three laps left, Naughton got alongside Allen on the back straight and had the inside position going into the right-hander on the south side, but Allen had a better drive off the plateau jump and held the spot. The Apache/Bent/Pro Action-sponsored Allen took the moto win, shadowed by Naughton. Kalina finished third. In the first Over 30 Junior moto, Miklos had the lead, pursued by Patrick Noriega and series points leader David Wick. Then Wick looped over his bars on the south side of the course, falling out of contention. Dr. Wick, a chiropractor, later diagnosed himself as having broken his left wrist. Miklos was now being chased by Bryan Park, who passed Noriega on the back straight, and Shaun Robert. On lap two, Mike Mennenga passed Fletcher Schuler for fifth. At the finishline jump, Robert passed Noriega for third. Mennenga went by Noriega on the front straight for fourth. Then Schuler got around Noriega on the south side for fifth. Miklos took the moto win, followed by Park, Robert, Mennenga, Schuler and Noriega. In moto two, Mark Hatfield got the holeshot over Noriega, who almost went down on the first jump. The lead changed as they came over the finish line, with Noriega out front, followed by Schuler, Robert and Hatfield. In the whoop section, Schuler and Robert went by Noriega. Miklos was charging from a poor start and was in fourth, with Mennenga and Park next in line. Miklos came alongside Noriega in the whoops and completed the pass on the back straight. Then Mennenga went by Noriega on the south cue I • n _ _ OS • AUGUST 29, 2001 55
