ore than 500 of the Northeast's
best motocross riders came out
for round six of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Series, hosted
by the Walden Playboys Motorcycle
club. The inaugural Matt Warren
Scholarship surf-and-turf dinner was
held the night before to raise money
for the scholarship fund. Mother
Nature provided blue skies and lots of
sunshine, which put temperatures in
the upper 80s, and that made it - well,
pretty darn hot. A pretty good breeze
blew throughout the day, which made
the heat a little more bearable if one
had some shade nearby.
Paul Corey made a sweep of three
of the race program's toughest classes, taking overalls in the I25cc and
250cc Open Expert classes and also
the extremely competitive Collegeboy
class. Corey rode to a perfect 1-1
score in the 250cc Open Expert
class, and he traded moto wins with
Mike Leavitt in the 125cc Expert
class - Corey's 2-1 rides earned him
the 125cc overall, while Leavitt was
runner-up with his 1-3 rides. Corey
also scored a 2-1 for the overall in
the Collegeboy class, just ahead of
Charlie Ellis, whose 3-2 rides were
good enough for second overall.
Corey got the first I25cc Expert
moto under way by leading the pack
out of the first turn, with Leavitt, Mark
Waldele, Dave Ginolfi and Henry
Mormile trailing. When the leaders
emerged from the wooded back section of the long, fast, technical
Walden track, Corey was still in the
point position, Ginolfi had worked his
way up to second, Leavitt was third,
Andrew Pingotti had moved up to
fourth, and Mormile was hanging
tough in fifth.
Ginolfi caught Corey about
halfway into lap two and made the
pass for the lead. Just after the start
of lap three, Leavitt passed Corey for
second.

About halfway into lap three,
Mormile passed Pingotti for fourth.
Just before the start of lap four, Leavitt reeled in Ginolfi and made the pass
for the lead.
Leavitt began to pull away by lap
five. Walden is Leavitt's home track,
and it showed. Corey picked up the
pace in the remaining laps and
passed Ginolfi to take back second
with a lap and a half to go. Corey
then caught up with Leavitt and the
two battled for the lead in the last few
turns to the checkered flag. Leavitt
managed to hold Corey off for the
win. The first moto went in the record
books as Leavitt, Corey, Ginolfi, Mills
and EJia Pereira.
Leavitt na i1ed the holeshot in the
second moto but was quickly relegated to third by Corey and Ginolfi.
Rounding out the top five were Steve
Katsanevaris and Tom Burton. The top
five remained unchanged until lap
three, when Katsanevaris came off the
back section of the track in third, but
he didn't stay there long, as Leavitt
came back with a textbook block-pass
in the turn preceding the whoop section and took back third. Katsanevaris
was relegated back to fourth. Burton
was still hanging tough in fifth.
The top five began to spread out
by lap four, and the top four
remained the same to the checkers.
Corey earned the second-moto win,
with Ginolfi, Leavitt, Katsanevaris and
Pingotti in tow.
Corey's 2-1 score earned him the
top spot on the 125cc Expert podium. Leavitt earned the runner-up tier
with his 1-3 rides, and Ginolfi (3-2)
rounded out the podium.
Jeff Ford led the pack out of the
first turn in the first Over 30 Amateur
moto. Trailing him were Tim Gillespie, John Tavernese, Mario Darpino

carding a 3-2 for second overall, and
Griffin, whose 2-4 rides earned him
third overall.

and Tom Griffin. Ford quickly pulled
away and had a five-second lead by
the start of lap two. Gillespie held
second, Griffin moved up to third,
Tavernese dropped to fourth and
Robert Christerson was fifth.
Ford had checked out by lap four
with a IO-second advantage but then
lost some time on the last lap to a
hard-charging Griffin, now in second.
Ford took the checkers with a fivesecond lead, trailed by Griffin,
Verderosa, Gillespie and Kevin Sisson.
Ford managed to get another great
start in the second Over 30 Amateur
moto and led the moto once again wire
to wire. Trailing Ford out of the first
tum were Verderosa, Gillespie, Anthony Franco and Tavemese. The top four
went unchanged on lap two, with Antonio Garofalo moving up to fifth.
Ford hung on for the second-moto
win. Rounding out the top five at the
checkered flag were Verderosa, Sisson, Griffin and Gillespie.
